Candidate Statement for Western Section USCF Trustee Election
For the past six years, I have been the strongest advocate for
membership on the USCF Board as well as any of the other USA Cycling
boards.
I have submitted and passed legislation opening up cyclocross to
NORBA members (this helps promoters).
I have argued strongly for one license for USA Cycling so that NORBA
riders could compete in USCF races and vice-versa without having to
go through the hassle of purchasing a second license. Why is this
crucial to the health of the sport? Because doing so dramatically
increases the available participant pool for both the USCF and NORBA.
This will result in more race participants, happier racers, and
especially happier promoters.
I have argued strongly for softening the recently passed rule
requiring all bicycles to be UCI compliant by January 1, 2007. I
will continue to argue to soften this rule so that it doesn't apply
for lower category riders and races. Why? Because this would
eliminate many perfectly safe and legitimate racing bicycles from
being used by new racers who don't have the cash to buy a UCI
compliant bike whenever the rules change. For example, do you own a
cyclocross bike with disk brakes? You might be out of luck with the
new rule. Is your TT bike compliant? If not, then you can't race
the local TT series. This rule hurts both promoters (fewer
participants eligible) and new riders.
I have been very outspoken regarding the past management of USAC.
While this has improved dramatically with the new CEO Gerard
Bisceglia, there is still room for improvement in the way that
business is done.
I have been called the conscience of the USCF board - I argue for
clarity and precision in the language used in the rules. This role
has prevented many ill-worded rules from being placed in your
rulebook. I have made sure that past resolutions passed by the USCF
Board have been followed and more importantly, not lost during a
change of staff or of USCF trustees. I have argued strongly for
preserving member voting rights. I have argued for a restructuring
of the USAC Governance system so that it more fairly represents you
the average racer.
I have worked for fiscal responsibility on the part of the USCF Board
in passing a resolution to have all fall meetings take place in
Colorado Springs (which saves a great deal on travel and results in
more effective meetings because more staff members are present).
I have worked to pass resolutions to affiliate with the League of
American Bicyclists and Bikes Belong. Why? Because bicycle advocacy
is important to the racing community to help preserve courses and
racing opportunities, and because LAB has 30,000+ members, many of
whom are potential bike racers.
I penned the current USCF Mission Statement (with input from others)
which follows:

I have been the only one on any of the boards pushing to get the USA
Cycling Board to follow the Ted Stevens Amateur Sports Act and USAC's
own bylaws and create a female director position on the USA Cycling
Board. I feel that this is necessary to continue to grow and
strengthen women's cycling in the U.S.
Weekly series races are the backbone of racing. I have worked to
institute low cost permits to cover these races and will continue to
work towards increasing the focus on your home town's Tuesday Night
Criterium series.
I currently am the editor of Cycling Utah Magazine, I raced for many
years as a Category II rider and a NORBA expert (until I was hit by
a car in an accident that ended my racing days), I work on our local
advocacy board, I have promoted races, and I have worked in a bike
shop for a number of years. As a result, I understand the sport at
many levels, and especially how they affect participation and growth
of our sport.
