Thanks Tim, The video was eye opening! It was really scary to see how
easy it was open the lock!

I opened my 10 year old kryptolok yesterday using the pen trick in about
30
seconds, I had to cut a slit in the pen to get it into the barrel of the
lock but it worked. I tried it on another newer lock and couldn't get it
to
turn after a couple minutes of trying even though the pen fit easier.
There's been a couple postings by locksmiths on the original bikeforums
thread about why the pen trick works (it's an inherent flaw in the round
key
design). The original poster on bikeforums did this on a brand new lock
and
a number of the follow-up posters have said they went to their LBS and
opened half the locks in the shop.
Word is already out there, with it being this easy this will lead to
more
"casual" bike thieves. The hardcore thieves would find a way to get the
bike
no matter what but when it's this easy there will be more people who
will
try it for kicks (and how suspicious is a bic pen anyways).
If you use a lock with a round key you really should stop using it and
switch to a different kind of lock (like a masterlock and chain) at
least
for now. Any lock can be defeated but it just shouldn't be this easy.

Sadly, the Bic pen trick works! I was able to open a brand-new
Kryptonite
EV2000 lock more than a dozen times yesterday! It was a little tricky
reclosing the locking cylinder, but I suspect your average thief isn't
too interested in reclosing your lock. I tried it later in the evening
at
home on a much older Kryptonite lock and couldn't get the pen to fit -
apparently the center pin/cylinder on the new Krypto locks are smaller
than their older locks.
