Robert, with all due respect, when I out-sprinted you to win the
District Road Race in 1980 (I think that was the year :-), it was with a
53x12, and it worked real fine...

(Seriously, there are appropriate gears for different situations...in an
extended tail wind section, if you've got 10-20 inches of gear less than
the rest of the field, your forced spin's gonna not going to be
optimal! On the other hand, a twisty criterium requires snap and
acceleration, and that ain't gonna happen at 50 rpm!)
