TIME or egg beaters are the only way to go. I ride times and love them, I know people who ride egg beaters and have never had a problem. These two pedal systems are notorious for continuing to work well in heavy mud, which is a big part of CX.

Thanks to all who responded regarding advice on CX wheels (the general consensus was that Rolf Vector Pros are fine). Now I am looking for advice on pedals for CX (I just broke my Bontragers this week).

What do people think about the Egg Beaters vs the Time Atacs? Are there any others worth considering? (My Shimano M747s from my MTB seem like they weigh a ton.)

Again, thanks in advance for any input - Rob

Either design is fantastic. I like my egg beaters quite a bit. The 747s

will work fine in the dry stuff, too.

When it's really muddy, something that clears mud might be better, like the

atacs or egg beaters.

I am speaking from experience. I used to ride spd's in cross, some cheap

ones that came with my redline bike. I USED to, until I one race that had

some very sticky mud on the course.

The spds didn't clear mud very well, and as I was having a really hard time

clicking in and out of them. The point I decided those spd pedals were not

for me was when somewhere around the time I was approaching a barrier late

in the race. Right foot unclipped and ready to hit the ground, the barrier

approached rapidly. I released my left foot at the perfect time and

gracefully leapt over the barrier.

Well that was what was supposed to happen. Instead, I couldn't get my left

foot out no matter how hard I twisted or how spastic my movements became as

the barrier rapidly approached. I eventually ran out of time and hit it

straight on. I actually did come out of the pedal at that point, flying

over the barrier and doing a face plant in the mud. I had just enough time

to raise my head up off the ground before my bike landed on it and made me

eat more dirt.

This is why I believe it is important to have pedals that don't get jammed

up with mud when racing on a muddy course.

-Erik
