"...be more careful" says Tri-met driver

"opening the door just as I come by in the bike lane."

If I'm reading you right, you attempt to pass a bus on the right when it

stops to pick up / let off passengers. That's just asking for it!

Could not hold back any longer. Not to make any direct comment about this

note specifically, but in general this is the type of response that really

gets me going.

I do not care what happened to one bus and one rider on one day. This

is no different than the person who takes the attitude that one bike

rolled

through a stop sign once and therefore all bikes should be banned from the

road, typical talk show caller response.

Trimet drivers are no different from the rest of the driving public or

any other professional driver. I have ridden on the roads with some who

are

polite and courteous, like all other drivers and some who are not. I

regularly report Trimet drivers who run me off the road or in any other

manner endanger me when I am riding. Trimet has a well serviced complaint

department. Sometimes I actually get a nice letter back. Complain, your

complaints are heard. I have even heard back from Trimet when a bus

almost

ran me over in the crosswalk in Hillsdale. The bus ran the red light at

the

 same time.

Just because a bus has a schedule to keep is no reason to run cyclist

off the road. Sorry, 20 seconds late to the next stop is no

justification.

Follow a bus into Hillsdale on Beav/Hillsdale Hwy in from Beav. Average

speed is the same for both even if they pause a little instead of speeding

ahead and opening the door just as I come by in the bike lane.

Bottom line, bad bus drivers need to go. Complain.

honest with your self. from the stories I

I hope this sheds some light on a drivers

After getting run off the road by a

Tri-met bus today, I

 caught up with

the bus at a light and told the driver

she just ran me

 into the bushes

on the last corner. Her response was

the same one she

 gave me about 2

or 3 months ago, "you bike riders need

to be more careful".

I attempted to describe my view of

events but she just

 threatened to

call the police. I told her that

would be fine since we

 were both

  involved in the same accident.

However, after waiting

 for the police

 to

show up for over 20 minutes, I was

encouraged to let the

 commuters on

the bus to go home, meaning a few of

the commuters were

 a bit upset at

driver wouldn't let

 this one guy off

  the bus.

So, "you bike riders need to be more

careful"!

  file a report with Tri-Met.

Subject: [OBRA Chat] "...be more

careful" says Tri-met driver

After getting run off the road by a

Tri-met bus today, I

 caught up with

the bus at a light and told the driver

she just ran me

 into the bushes

on the last corner. Her response was

the same one she

 gave me about 2

or 3 months ago, "you bike riders need

to be more careful".

I attempted to describe my view of

events but she just

 threatened to

call the police. I told her that

would be fine since we

 were both

  involved in the same accident.

However, after waiting

 for the police

 to

show up for over 20 minutes, I was

encouraged to let the

 commuters on

the bus to go home, meaning a few of

the commuters were

 a bit upset at

me. Luckily, for me probably, the

driver wouldn't let

 this one guy off

  the bus.

So, "you bike riders need to be more

careful"!

Also in case none of you have ever driven a bus they have a really big blind spot. I have driven school buses and motor-homes I have NEVER intentionally cut off a bike but I have made a few mistakes when I could not see them--especially if they came up on my right side. If you cannot see the bus/motorhome/truck mirrors they cannot see you! Stay out of their way.

That being said. Report the rude behavior and any deliberate wrong actions by a tri-met bus or a school bus. (I actually got a school bus driver fired because I was the third or fourth person to complain about similar behavior.) If that driver makes a habit of the behavior they will loose their job.

I agree wholeheartedly with everyone's response about reporting bad driver behavior.

That being said a few of the things I learned early that has helped keep me alive this long are:

"don't cross tracks at an angle especially when wet" and "don't flip off drivers especially if they are in a pick up with a gun rack" and "never linger on the right side of a motor home, big truck or especially buses" Lead, follow or pass on the right.

I'm not saying Steve was in the wrong or that the bus driver's response was called for. I'm sure Steve had every right to be where he was and I wasn't there to see if maybe the bus half passed him and then squeezed him off. I'm sure we have all had that happen at some point more than once.

I'm just saying if you are on the right side of a bus, you are in imminent danger of assuming road temperature.

You bike riders be careful!

With a bus full (potentially) of witnesses Tri-Met needs to know they are

knocking on the door of a big-time lawsuit with (judging by the number of emails

I've seen in the last few days of driver negligence) this kind of thing.

Most of us racer types are pretty good at anticipation and bike handling.

But what about the other cyclists on the road that we all see who aren't so sure

footed?

If they (tri-met) won't listen because of moral reasons, I say play the money

card. Talk in a language they'll understand......money. If they hear in so

many words they could get sued and some bad publicity and all the other things

that come with wrongful injury or death, maybe then they'll sympathize.

Dan,

I think it's the attitude that we are protesting to here from these

beligerent bus drivers.

A couple of weeks ago, a bus driver almost ran me over to take a right turn.

As he was approaching me, I was in the bike lane, I signaled to him to give

me more room as he was riding the white line. He didn't do it and he also

never cleared me before he went to make his right hand turn. I hit the side

of the bus with my hand and he stopped after a passenger told him to. I will

report this kind of beligerent driver every single day of the week and make

sure I follow up on it to boot.

I had an incident at the same place David reported. I also believe it

was within a couple of weeks.

I reported to Tri-Met and the city transportation department the route#,

bus#, time and the fact I had lights and hi-viz clothing on.

I received an apology from Tri-Met along with some detail around what

would happen to the driver, as well as future consequences to him if

more verifiable incidents occurred.

The city also noted that they had numerous reports of this spot being

inadequately designed. I believe that specific part of the bike lane has

been widened as much as possible without concrete work.

Anyhow, it pays to report these, since action will be taken. Also,

accumulating documented evidence of problem areas allow for changes to

be made.

 File a darn complaint

My experience is that Tri-met won't actually admit error. I got squeezed betwixt bus and high curb, and we "stopped and talked about it" ("cowboy-style," sans lasso), waiting for the supervisor to arrive.

It DID result in a blurb in their in-house driver newsletter, alerting care in this particular area (W. end of Hawthorne Bridge, W.-bound), but the letter I got from Tri-met said "We're sorry you had this problem." Yeah, I had a problem...

same song different verse.

Steve 2-3 months ago when the same driver ran you off the road, did you file a trimet conplaint? No? well then off course why would she care. if you had filed a complaint 2-3 months ago the complaint you will file when you are done reading this email would have more impact!!

File a darn complaint, bus #, driver description, etc. (503) 238-ride is Trimet's #

things will not improve if we do not use the system that exists, or revolt and create our own system, which would be more time consuming and gte int he way of cyclocross!

Did you call Tri-Met and report her to her supervisor?

I bet they would at least be in terested in how she's driving a bus around

with a business name on it.

I'm a transportation supervisor at work and I'd be interested to know that

one of my drivers was driving with that kind of attittude toward the other users

of the road and putting my department on the line for a big-time expense.

That's my 2 cents.

I think another option is to request that the bus driver contact their

supervisor. The supervisor is responsible for sorting everything out.

A few years ago I had a Tri-met driver run me off the road also. After

explaining to her why this wasn't such a nice thing to do, she mentioned

that she used her turn signal so she had the right-of-way. I sent a

letter to Fred Hansen (Tri-met's Director) that day. About a week later

an assistant to Fred gave me a call to say that the driver had been sent

back to bus driver school. Pretty satisfying experience!

So I whole-heartedly agree with George and Mark: File a complaint (and

follow up on it with phone calls).

I have had a few similar events where the bus pulled over to the curb to

pick up a passenger without noting that I was already there and ran me

into the curb. I received a similar response from the driver, and my

response was that I was going to file a report with Tri-Met. I received

an apology from the driver immediately. Tri-Met takes these events very

seriously and generally does not tolerate the type of response you

received. If you have the number of the bus or the name of the driver,

file a report with Tri-Met.

Subject: [OBRA Chat] "...be more careful" says Tri-met driver

After getting run off the road by a Tri-met bus today, I caught up with

the bus at a light and told the driver she just ran me into the bushes

on the last corner. Her response was the same one she gave me about 2

or 3 months ago, "you bike riders need to be more careful".

I attempted to describe my view of events but she just threatened to

call the police. I told her that would be fine since we were both

involved in the same accident. However, after waiting for the police to

show up for over 20 minutes, I was encouraged to let the commuters on

the bus to go home, meaning a few of the commuters were a bit upset at

me. Luckily, for me probably, the driver wouldn't let this one guy off

the bus.

So, "you bike riders need to be more careful"!

same song different verse.
