From Old Guys Who....

    In '56 during my first SoCal Road Championship around the Rose Bowl

in Pasadena everyone had to use a single fixed gear. Being young and

dumb I put on a much larger gear than guys like Jack Disney et al were

using (no Jr. restrictions). On the last lap of a ten miler I was off

the front (just pedaled slowly away) and was on my way to a possible win

when they noticed my slow pedal stroke didn't quite match my speed.

Then, of course. I was run over by the train quite a ways before the

line. Later, Jack came up to me and asked, "Hey kid, what kinda gear

you got on that thing?"
