Lactate Threshold Testing Availalable at River City Bicycles
Starting Friday, Oct. 15, you can get your lactate threshold tested at River City Bicycles in Portland, Ore. The test takes approximately one hour and costs $75. It is done by appointment only, and only on Fridays and Saturdays.
WHAT IS YOUR LACTATE THRESHOLD?
When you perform physical activity at a high intensity, your body produces lactate. It is a byproduct of metabolic work and is found in the blood during and after intense exercise.
Lactate threshold testing allows you to determine your optimal training intensity zones and to accurately measure your fitness improvement. Your lactate threshold will tell you approximately what heart rate you can maintain indefinitely and still clear lactate from your bloodstream. By measuring changes in your lactate threshold, you can also measure improvement in your fitness level.
WHY GET A LACTATE THRESHOLD TEST?
Traditionally, the VO2 Max test has been used as a marker of fitness and endurance capacity, but it is only an estimate of what you are capable of. Your lactate threshold, however, will tell you exactly what heart rate you need to train at in order to work out harder, faster, longer, and with less pain. With proper training, you can increase your lactate threshold--and thus be able to go at a harder, more intense pace for longer periods of time. Bike racers, triathletes, marathon runners, and other individuals who are seriously interested in improving their training and physical fitness could benefit from lactate threshold testing.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
The test consists of a progressive interval workout on your bike, set up on an indoor trainer, for about 40 minutes, followed by a cool-down period. At regular intervals, a sample of your blood is drawn and tested. (Don't worry; it's only a small pinprick, similar to getting your cholesterol or blood glucose tested.) The test will be performed by Stephenie Sullivan, a trained exercise physiologist. Stephenie will also help you analyze the data and recommend changes to your exercise routine based on your results.
ABOUT STEPHENIE SULLIVAN:
Stephenie Sullivan has a master's degree in exercise physiology and is a certified personal trainer.
