i would very much like to agree with you...unfortunately however, if you

consider the huge financial success that oprah's book club has brought to

many writers and the fact that she's one of the wealthiest and most

influential women in america because of her show (you'd be amazed at the

number of working people who tape her at 4 p.m.), i would hardly take her

influential value lightly. i'll bet a large percentage of her fans are

probably the same motorists most cyclists fear on the road.



i think it's worth everyone's time to respond to this show via her website

listed below...if nothing else but to remind her that there is still a

significant portion of the population who's exercising their right to stay

fit and healthy and live longer so that we can take good care of all the

folks who opted only to exercise their right to watch talk shows.

When one considers the running diatribe from particluar boob in the

Oregonian who takes it upon himself to write his monthly 'Get rid of

bike lanes!' piece. This is the show that he would LOVE to be an audience

particpant in. This frightens me very much.



In the past 4 months, I have been:

1 - Yelled at (Get your *%$@*& ass off the road!)

2 - Nearly hit (It was sweet justice to see the group of teens in

    Daddy's BMW get pulled over by the patrolman who saw the incident)

3 - Thrown at (For GOd's sake, if people are going to throw stuff at me,

    let it be money. My cycling habit is getting expensive!)



I do agree with what one particpant wrote in r.b.r: If we could go around

to drivers education classes and spend 30 minutes on motorist/cyclist

interaction, that would be a good thing.

George, in your neat and tidy world unreasonable people no doubt fall under

the sword of reason and truth. For the rest of us, "trash TV" represents a

widely viewed and influential (read that "believed") information vehicle.

It doesn't matter if the "information" is true or not. It matters only

that there will be thousands of folks out "there" who will watch and be

influenced. Ignore this stuff at your peril. I suggest that letters to

the network, to editorial boards, to syndicated columnists, and to Oprah

Winfrey are definitely in order. And, while you're at it, be

straightforward, factual, passionate, and believeable.



I often don't even respond to this stuff. A flood of letters, FAXes, and

EMAIL is very much in order this time.

...yet it is exactly this target audience that scares me the most while I'm

out riding. These are the same people that have no respect for our safety or

our rights as bicyclists and/or 'vehicles' of the road, by honking, yelling,

If you go to the Oprah website noted below you'll find a place to tell your

"horror" stories about autos and bicycles. Here's the story I sent to

Oprah...I'm sure most of you have similar stories of rude drivers...



Motorists need to open their minds to share the road with other forms of

transportaion.

It's horrifying how many times I've had a car cut me off in traffic -

despite the fact I'm dress in bright safety colors and covered head to toe

with reflective tape (as is my bike).

Motorists are often inconsiderate or rude to bicyclists.

I once had a motorist yell at me for riding 1 foot outside of the marked

bike lane. When I pointed out that the bike lane contained

a broken glass bottle (I was avoiding it) the woman had the nerve to "flip

me off" and deny that there was any glass in the bike lane!!!

I was stunned! Why do motorists think they own the road? It is an uniquely

American viewpoint. I have lived in Europe and NEVER had

an encounter with a motorist, not even a close call - despite the roads

being much much narrower!

What is wrong with the American motorists mentality that they can not share

the road???
