I'm not a scientist and don't play one on TV but I believe stem cell research does show some promise for certain types of brain damage just not spinal cord damage. I think nerves can regenerate about 1mm per year. When spinal columns grow back together, and they can, although very slowly, there is scar tissue that blocks nerve impulses. That is the current biggest problem with spinal cord rehabilitation. Who knows what the future holds?
But you are right that Edwards comments were way out of line.

Your credibility just went by the way of political rhetoric. Do you really think moveonpac.org is a reasonable source of information? Further, your "reeves" source refers to simple high school quality op ed piece. My senior high school project was better and it sucked! I hope you are not going to be doing a thesis any time soon as your sources cannot be defended.
Dan is correct; the argument about embryo stem cells is invalid and has become an abortion issue and has nothing more. Pro-abortion people do not want embryos to be deemed anything but a clump of cells and anti-abortion people want embryos to be deemed human life. The embryo stem cell battle is just the latest in that argument and has nothing to do with Mr. Reeve or others who suffer from injuries and diseases.
This is really a stupid argument because more could be done for people suffering from fatal injuries and diseases by simply lifting the restrictions on the use of experimental drugs.
As my sister-in-law says, who suffers from ALS, "the FDA is protecting us to death!"

Assuming any part of the rest of your statement is factual (always a risky assumption with your posts) that means your "big joke" is that Edwards made a statement about Bush's policies regarding stem cell research at a time most of the world was unaware of Christopher Reeve's death. After all, the story didn't hit the wires until yesterday, despite the fact he died on the 10th.
