OBRA could create a marketing budget but this would be money that OBRA
spends on something on something else currently. Some of that money could
go to paying someone but that would be part of the marketing budget that
would not go to ads, flyers, posters, etc. The total amount of this budget
could not be very large without adversely effecting what OBRA is currently
spending money on. The dues this year will probably already be increasing
because of increased costs for providing numbers. Increasing dues decreases
participation. The amount raised by increasing dues is pretty small for
adverse effect. Raising the membership fee $1 generates roughly $2,000. I
have no idea how much a marketing consultant would cost. I do know that a
large amount of money can be spent in advertising.

That sounds like a great idea Mike. It does seem like the more people knew
about bike racing, the easier everything would be for us. The population at
large is apparently unaware that there is a difference between OBRA events
and events like Bridge Pedal.
Would it be possible to actually contract with someone(s) to do this? Could
we come up with a budgeted allowance for PR each year? How much would we
need to increase annual dues?

OBRA really could use a person (or people) to do media relations for
much more than just car vs. bike safety issues. In fact, I would
argue that if we were to put any effort towards media relations that
the car vs. bike issue, as important as it is, would be further down
the list behind publicizing bike races to potential participants,
spectators and other road users.
