i have also had my chain drop down below a 3rd eye

chain watcher while racing. luckily, i was able yank

it back out.



i use the same system as Chris Brandt for an outer

chaingaurd. anybody know of an alternative to the 3rd

eye for someone who isn't willing to spring the $$$

for a fsa chain guard to protect against chain drop to

the inside? it seems that one just grind down a

chainring and attach it with spacers and some kind of

long bolt to the inside.

made my own outer guards out of an old 48 tooth

chainring, w/o

grinder.

The inner guard is the best solution, but if the chainstays on your bike

don't allow for enough space to use an inner guard, even with a triple

bottom bracket (118mm), even with the guard in the inner ring position,

you have to pursue the best alternative.



I actually use and prefer the metal version of this device too. It is

made by a company called "N-Gear" and it's a metal plate w/ a more

effective clamp. It is much easier to position this guide close to the

chainring (set it up while in the largest cog, w/in about 1-2mm). My

spare bike is set up with this device and I recently went back to the

plastic one due to in-availability at the time.

I have had a chain jam below a worn plastic 3rd eye one several years

ago. They can become flexible with wear and time, making it possible for

a chain to be forced through it if you really clobber it. If your

drivetrain is flexy making the space open up, or else your chainrings

are out of true, the opportunity arises for enough space to swallow your

chain. For some people who can be delicate w/ their bike, using finesse

through the bumps right before the barrier, and setting the bike down

gently while re-mounting after a barrier, you shouldn't have any

problems.

I too had a chain fall off the inside while using a "chain watcher" thingy.

Admittedly, I was going down stairs at the time so it had a good excuse but

still I wanted to make sure it not happen in a race. I considered the old

"bolt on a derailleur and lock down the screws" method but that defeats the

purpose of having a guard which can also work as a bash guard unless you

have one of those pricey foofoo carbon jobs that will shatter at the sight

of a bottom bracket high log.

My solution was to take a piece of all purpose stainless steel rear rack

mount strap / bracket stuff make an "L" out of it with a hole in the short

end and bolt it to a plastic reflector / light mount clamp. Star washers

keep the metal bit from twisting. It works like just the inside part of a

front derailleur. It's like a "chain watcher" thingy only with more

"watching". I haven't gone down any stairs lately but the chain has not

come off in the 2 races I've done so far either.

I don't use an inner chain guard. I use a 3rd eye chainwatcher thing

that keeps the chain on from the inside. If you don't have clearance on

the inside for a guard, even using a triple bottom bracket, maybe this

is your best option. It keeps your chainline preserved pretty well. I

made my own outer guards out of an old 48 tooth chainring, w/o

ramps/pins. Snap off the teeth w/ 1/2" width vicegrip pliers, then

either smooth it down w/ a bastard file or use a grinder.

Does anyone know about nice, lightweight chain guides? I've seen the aluminum Spot and carbon FSA. Needs to be thin, old rings won't work due to clearance issues. Anything else out there?
