With the reactions as severe as you describe, I would urge you to seek

professional help. You're doing something wrong. Keep a log of what you

eat, when you eat it, when you start racing/training, when the symptoms

start, etc. Everybody is different. Experiment and see what works for you.

Subject: [OBRA Chat] post race stomach pains

I have had the worst stomach pains after some races and very hard

workouts. they start about 10-15 minutes after and last all night. The

bad ones put me on the toilet all night and sometimes i will even vomit.

I know many people have experienced this, but what seems to help?

Hey there,

What you describe could be many things, even health related. I'll just

share my own experience, which may or may not be similar. Are you

vomiting from the pain, or due to what you ate?

I used to feel that way after a cross race, back in my early days as a

beginner. I was eating a powerbar like 1/2 hour to an hour before the

race. I would get a terrible gut ache like you describe for the rest of

the day into the evening. The intensity combined w/ no water really puts

some stress to your gut. Over the years, I have learned that when riding

w/ so much intensity, I really needed to have my stomach clear and food

digested for at least 2.5 - 3 hours. Now I'm even pushing 3.5 - 4 hours.

It's different for everyone and takes time and experience to figure it

out.You need to have all your fuel stores supplied (what can YOU eat to

provide this?), while at the same time an empty stomach. You need to be

fully hydrated. Sometimes still, I can get that feeling even from

drinking an energy drink like cytomax, even mixed at half strength. I've

been reminded the last two weeks how bad that makes me feel so I'll

stick to water from here on.

That's my experience. I'm sure others have alternative ideas. Good luck.
