The most common light failure I've seen trail riding is an incorrectly

charged battery. It happens to someone in my group every week, even me.

provide adequate lighting. A friend of mine was using one, and hit a

dead raccoon which I believe he easily would have avoided had he had a

better headlight. He ended up in the hospital with numerous broken

bones and faces a very long and painful recovery. Sure he only spent

$50 on the light, but how much in medical bills and lost time at work

(not to mention pain and suffering and the inability to do much except

sleep). The question comes down to how much your life is worth. Its

like the old joke, "Is a $40 helmet good enough? Sure if you have a $40

head." There is to point in trying to save money with respect to safety

issues.

overly impressed even though I was not prepared to be impressed for the

price.

The mount is flimsy for the weight of both the batteries and the light

causing quite a bit of vibration. I also had to flip the threaded insert

for the retaining knob so that I could actually clamp the bars and

engage more than a turn or two of threads. As stated below the beam is

very concentrated.

I like the fact that I can use the same rechargeable batteries I use in

my digital camera and can easily carry a few extra double A' s in case

of an emergency.

I'll use it for the road but would not recommend it for evening trail

riding.

light. Cateye EL-500 and the new, non-digital one available through

Performance. 4-AA's last 30 or 8 hrs respectively. The Cateye has a

I have the model just prior to the digital evolution called the digital

headTrip and my brother has the digital evolution. I've had mine for

several years now and had to replace the battery once. Although the old

battery is still functional, I don't get the 2+ hours out of it on high

beam any more so I got another one. Now I have 3-4 hours of dark riding

if I need it. I've been pretty happy with it and trust me, if you have

this thing on the 15W setting, nobody is going to be looking into it.

It's pretty bright. It's bright enough to see stuff and then avoid it.

Whereas some of the cheaper lights are about bright enough to see what

you are GOING to hit.

I haven't experienced any spontaneous combustion and I haven't even

heard of that before. I haven't had to replace the bulb yet....

races on the horizon). I think I'd prefer a helmet-mounted system, and

I'd like to keep it under $300. Is this a winner? If I don't mount it

to my frame will it last longer than 6 months? Do the electrical

systems really spontaneously combust?

I have a NightRider Digital Pro System (12 & 20 Watt bulbs). It's 3

years old this year and has served me well for commuting (I do have my

issues with it). I finally lost my 12 Watt bulb yesterday morning (big

surprise), but the 20W is still working.

I also have the Cat Eye(r) HL-EL300 Headlight ($34.99). Works well on

4-AA batteries.

Another option is a Light & Motion lighting system

(http://www.lmionline.com/ <http://www.lmionline.com/> ). They are

primarily underwater camera-type folks, and make "bomb proof" stuff.

Their bike lights (http://www.bikelights.com/

<http://www.bikelights.com/> ) are only slight modified from their

underwater equipment (so I've been told).

A L&M system will be my next commuter light (especially if they can

compete with NiteRider's bright tail lights), and for $600.00 for their

top-end stuff - it better be worth it!!

I have the Digital Evolution and I agree with the assessment below. I

also have the HID bar mounted version, and it is incredible. Whether

you are a recreational rider or a 24-hour rider, has nothing to do with

the value of the HID lights. For the same run time as a 15 watt Halogen

light, you can get 40 to 50 watts of lighting, which provides for a much

safer ride, no matter what type of riding you do.

Also, the best solution is to have both a bar mounted and a helmet

mounted light, as they provide sources of light at two different angles

and if the bulb on one happens to blow out on a ride, you have an

immediate backup.

It do not think the LED lights are a good investment, as they do not

provide adequate lighting. A friend of mine was using one, and hit a

dead raccoon which I believe he easily would have avoided had he had a

better headlight. He ended up in the hospital with numerous broken

bones and faces a very long and painful recovery. Sure he only spent

$50 on the light, but how much in medical bills and lost time at work

(not to mention pain and suffering and the inability to do much except

sleep). The question comes down to how much your life is worth. Its

like the old joke, "Is a $40 helmet good enough? Sure if you have a $40

head." There is to point in trying to save money with respect to safety

issues.

The mount is flimsy for the weight of both the batteries and the light

causing quite a bit of vibration. I also had to flip the threaded insert

for the retaining knob so that I could actually clamp the bars and

engage more than a turn or two of threads. As stated below the beam is

very concentrated.

I like the fact that I can use the same rechargeable batteries I use in

my digital camera and can easily carry a few extra double A' s in case

of an emergency.

I'll use it for the road but would not recommend it for evening trail

riding.

called the digital headTrip and my brother has the digital evolution.

I've had mine for several years now and had to replace the battery once.

Although the old battery is still functional, I don't get the 2+ hours

out of it on high beam any more so I got another one. Now I have 3-4

hours of dark riding if I need it. I've been pretty happy with it and

trust me, if you have this thing on the 15W setting, nobody is going to

 right now is NightRider's

 Digital Evolution. Can't afford or justify those HID lights now

 (mostly recreational rider, no 24-hour races on the horizon). I think

 I'd prefer a helmet-mounted system, and I'd like to keep it under

 $300. Is this a winner? If I don't mount it to my frame will

 it last longer than 6 months? Do the electrical systems really

 spontaneously combust?
