Frankly, as an official I really appreciate it when I get emails pointing

out where a potential problem is. And we all know that a simple "thanks For

the note, I will look into it" is not that difficult or time consuming.

Hey - I wasn't trying to stir the pot! What prompted me to ask the question

was Candi's e-mail with the 'cross BAR points. She calculated those with

incorrect results from Bend, which means more work for her in the long run.

I just figured that getting it cleared up before the the series points are

calculated would save someone some rework.

Just because you sent one (or worse, many) emails to

the official and did not get a response in a timely

manner that does not mean they are ignoring you, think

your inquiry is bogus, don't care, etc.

Email is both a blessing and a curse for race

promoters and officials. Figure each category

probably generates 10-15 post-race emails; therefore

each race generates 50-100 emails. If each email

requires 3 to 15 minutes to process (read, think, act,

and respond), that adds up to a lot of time. Factor

in their day job, the holidays, and many other things,

and you can begin to understand why the reply time is

slow or nonexistent.

Based on my own experience as a race director, I

humbly submit that post-race emails tend to fall into

one of the following categories:

- 50% are nonsense or incompressible garbage

- 20% resemble some form of decent, adult

communication yet are incomplete and require further clarification (and

thus more email)

- 10% are inflammatory, degrading, or disrespectful

- 10% are the complete and total opposite of some

other email

- 5% are related to something other than the results

(Dear OBRA official, I left my favorite pump by the Start/Finish area,

did you grab it?)

- <5% are reasonable, well written and understandable,

yet require time to investigate

Respectfully,

Clark Ritchie

I did send an e-mail for incorrect number of laps as well. No response. Cat

B though.

Maybe they were celebrating Thanksgiving a little early with some holiday

spirits!?

Oh well, it was a fun race. Great workout!

Just a guess - the referee may be celebrating Thanksgiving by spending

time with her family rather than correcting results!
