I owe a whole lot of folks my apologies for failing to provide better

directions in the flyer for the Second Annual Cycling Conference. It was

a huge oversight.

The Directions:

The Multnomah Athletic Club is located very near downtown Portland right

on the westside light rail line and less than a thousand feet from where

I-405 and Hwy 26 come together. It's actually located between 18th and

20th on SW Salmon Street in Portland. Parking is available in the MAC's

parking structure, right across Salmon St. from the club's main entrance.

To get to the club from the South (via I-5), get on I-405 as you approach

downtown Portland. Pass the 4th, 6th, 12th and "Beaverton" (Hwy 26)

exits, and tkae the Salmon Street exit which is next. At the end of the

exit ramp, go straight one block on SW 14th to SW Yamhill. Turn left. Go

three blocks on SW Yamhill to SW 17th. Turn left again. Go one block to

SW Salmon street. Turn Right. The club is two blocks ahead, past the

signals and the light rail line.

To get to the club from the North, (via I-5), go south on I-5 to I-405,

get in the right lanes and follow the traffic markings onto the "Fremont"

bridge (you'll be on the top deck). Now bear to the left and follow I-405

down into Downtown Portland. take the second exit on your right... marked

NW Everett and/or W Burnside. you'll be on NW 15th. Follow 15th across

Burnside (where it becomes SW 15th) five blocks to SW Salmon Street. Turn

right. Go four blocks (through the signals and across light rail) to the club,

From the East (via I-84) follow the signs to downtown /I-405 and then

follow the directions from the South (above).

From the West, take Hwy 26 toward the tunnels, but turn off at the

Jefferson Road exit before the tunnels. Turn left at SW 20th Ave, go two

and a half blocks to the entrance to the parking structure (on the right).

The main entrance to the club is located at the back of a little

turn-around off Salmon street. Use only that entrance and tell the person

at the desk that you are there for a Cycling Conference and she will

direct you from there.

If all else fails, and you are lost, call the club. 503 223 6251, and

select "directions to the club" and a recorded message will repeat

detailed directions for you.

If this is absolutely unclear, write or call me, and we'll try to figure

out what the problem is. (telephone number, 503 222 7173) ...my email

address is in the header.

For those who are unfamiliar with the Multnomah Athletic Club, our hosts

for this event, it's a hundred year old athletic club that was a prominant

cycling club at the turn of the century, the LAST turn of the century.

The MAC has hosted the US Olympic Committee, and has been the site of

numerous National Championships, in several sports. The club has been the

"home" club of nearly three score National Champions, a number of

Olympians, and just a few world champions. It's a large club, perhaps the

largest in the US, and has an international reputation for excellence in

its facilities, its staff, and its programs.
