This time of year I would recommend Independence Highway to the Independence
Bridge, cross the bridge and take River Rd into Salem. In the summer, when
the Buena Vista Ferry is operating, go north on Independence Highway only to
Springhill Rd. Turn right, then turn left on Buena Vista Rd, Go to Buena
Vista and take the ferry. Proceed north by the Ankeny game preserve and turn
left when there is a choice until you are on Riverside. Take Riverside to
its end (at the east end of the Independence Bridge) then River Rd into
Salem.

routes from Harrisburg to Monmouth, about 90%
of your route.

99 from Corvallis to Rickreal has wide shoulders and often ridden by
the bike club, but has lots of cars. Independence Hwy. has
no shoulders and less cars...its actually scares people more,
especially mid week.

99 does get kinda sketchy over some of the bridges also depends on what
time of year you ride it. Sometimes its chalk full of farm equipment. I
have done the Eugene to Corvallis route via powerline road-peoria road
at
harrisburg. That is a pretty good ride...
From there I am not quiet sure how 99 is, but I imagine there is some
other back roads that could get you up to salem from there. Might add
some
extra miles... but hey... thats a good thing! :)
Does anyone know of a fairly easy to follow route from
Eugene to Salem. I was originally thinking about just
riding 99, but was told that it would be too
dangerous.
Any suggestions, would be much appreciated.
