Bay Area Training Rides
A day-by-day guide to organized informal training rides in the East Bay,
Silicon Valley and the Peninsular
Monday
Monday Fremont / Milpitas Lunchtime Ride.
Time 12:00 noon
Meeting point is at the junction of Calaveras Road and Piedmont / Evans Road
by the church in Milpitas.
An informal group of racing types will decide at the meeting point exactly
how far they will climb Calaveras Road, whether just to the top of the wall???
or maybe beyond to the County Line on Calaveras Road. Most of the riders tend
to ride over from the heart of Silicon Valley. Due to the fact that the ride
goes directly up the hill, any group soon dissipates into a multitude of
individual time trials. There is a regroup at the top of the wall. This ride is
normally one of the easier rides of the week, considering that racers will be
recovering from a hard weekend ride or race.
Tuesday
Tuesday Fremont / Milpitas Lunchtime Ride.
Time 11:45 at the corner of Milmont and Page (Compaq / HP) in Fremont and a
further possible meeting at the same location as above at 12:00. Sometimes this
group bypasses this corner by climbing Old Calaveras.
An informal group of racers and strong century riders who will decide on the
way to the second meeting point where the days fun will be. Nearly all rides
go up Calaveras road but options of a ride to Alum Rock or back the other way
into the south Fremont hills have been known. Ride time is normally 1-½ hours
Email Richard Brockie at richard.m-@seagate.com for further details.
Great America Lunchtime ride.
Meeting Time: Tues 12:00
Meeting Place: Across from the 49er training camp near Great America in the
golf course parking lot on Tasman in Santa Clara
Typical Turnout: 10 to 25 riders. Occasionally Cat 1's. Usually always some
2 and 3's.
Course Description Approx 4 to 5 mille Clockwise flat loop (except for two
overpasses) from San Jose up to Alviso. Three laps are generally run. Although
portions are in traffic and have lights, every lap there is approximately a
1-mile sprint, with speeds exceeding 35mph.
The rides goes to Alviso for three intervals of around 5 min long. The
pace is very high, average speed is around 27-28 mph and the sprint can go up
to 40mph. The pace slows down for regrouping and goes around back to Alviso.
The recovery section takes around 8-10 mins. Total loop time is around 15min.???

The Noon Ride (from the Alto Velo web site).
For those that desire a bit of interval work, the noon ride at Page Mill and
Old Page Mill road at 12:00 PM sharp is worth the aggravation of getting
there. Pick up the pack about 12:06 rolling past the Park and Ride on Page Mill
Road. There's always a 1-hour loop back to Page Mill and Foothill, with longer
options on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. The loop is about 22 miles.
Doing the ride a couple of times a week will leave you with the sense that
you're participating in a cycling epic. It's also good training for road racing,
with an occasionally unruly pack that demands good bike handling skills.
Frequently unfolding like a road race with surges and little attacks on the hills,
you'll contest sprint points in the middle to the end.
San Jose BC Tuesday night training rides.
These start soon after daylight savings begin. Up to 2002 they were located
in the heart of San Jose somewhere, a secret to all but a chosen few. For 2002
they moved to a new location in Fremont, close to the old FFBC twilight
course. Exact location is the block on the intersection of Stevenson Blvd and Eureka
drive, west of Cherry. The continuation of these rides into 2003 will depend
upon the development of surrounding businesses, but a recent communication
with SJBC indicates a continuation.

Alto Velo Wednesday Lunch Time Sprints.
Meet in the Covington School parking lot after noon and start the workout
about 12:10 to 12:15. If you drive, please allow time for a warm-up, since the
folks who arrive right at the start time will be warmed up. We ride a loop
around Covington and Fremont, sprinting on Fremont, so you can come find us if you
arrive late. Since we have a short course that we ride repeatedly, folks can
show up mid-ride and still get a group workout. The course passes by Pinewood
School on the frontage road east of Foothill Expy, so look for us there.

Wednesday Evening Ride.
Fremont Freewheelers Pizza Rides.
These rides are for riders of ALL levels with a good attitude. Do the ride as
fast or as slow as you like and then have the pizza after along with a good
chat.
Refer to the FFBC web site for monthly alternating meeting locations (a pizza
parlor in the Tri-City area)

The Wednesday Ride (aka The Valley Ride). from the Alto Velo web site.
This popular group ride departs from the Los Altos Peet's around 6 pm each
Wednesday once day light savings time kicks in. A true hammer-fest, with many
local elite riders using it as their hard, midweek training session between
weekend races. The route takes you through Woodside and Portola Valley, with an
intermediate sprint at the Woodside town line. The climax of the ride is the KOM
sprint at the top of Huddart Park, but riders also contest the sprint for the
Addison-Wesley sign on Sand Hill road and the sprint for Page Mill road.
Cycle couriers of San Francisco.
Every Wednesday at 18:30 during summer daylight savings at the Polo fields in
Golden Gate Park
A safe car-free place to practice group riding and to learn some
fundamentals, where the beginner racer can learn about racing and how to get started.
These rides are primarily for women.
*This is an informal training session and attendance varies.

The Egan Ride (Alto Velo organized).
If you have to do intervals, the Egan ride is one of the least painful ways
to do them. It leaves from the Egan Middle School in Los Altos at 6 pm on
Thursdays once day light savings time takes effect. The route typically winds its
way through Los Altos Hills in a serpentine roller coaster of climbs and
descents designed to generate a deep lactic acid burn in even the strongest riders.
The Thursday Evening MVV ride.
Friday
Meet at Piedmont and Cropley in San Jose at 12:00. Head south and go up
Alum Rock Park, cut over to Hamilton road (don't know the name of the roads)
and down Mt. Hamilton road to Alum Rock. Loop time from the meeting place back
to the same point is around 45mins. The pace of this ride is brisk, normally
it will go easy until we hit the climb to Mt. Hamilton rd. But there will be
regrouping at the top anyway. Santiago Bolon
Other Weekday Rides
The Morning Ride from the Alto Velo web site.
Another fast group ride, this time meeting at the downtown Palo Alto Peet's
early in the morning at 7 am. This ride travels opposite of the Noon ride
around The Loop: Sand Hill, Portola, Alpine
The noon ride at Specialized, Morgan Hill.
I do not have any details about this ride apart from that it happens and is
run 3 times a week. I do know that it is open to guests. Ring Specialized???

Saturdays
The Spectrum ride, A Bay Area classic.
The Spectrum Ride officially starts at the Starbucks at the corner of
Hollenbeck and Homestead in Sunnyvale, but often picks up additional riders as it
motors along Foothill expressway towards Palo Alto. The route has changed
somewhat over the years, and now winds its way through Portola Valley, and out Canada
road through Woodside. Riders typically contest hot spot sprints at the
Woodside town line, and the end of Canada road. This local classic starts each
Saturday at 9 am, and typically rolls past downtown Los Altos around 9:15.
The Berkeley bicycle club ride from Sproul plaza, Cal Berkeley campus.
Time 8:00 am
A mixed group that normally splits in two after 10-15 miles. The longer ride
will be 50-80 miles and contain some good local racers
The Wheels of Thunder / VSRT ride.
Some of the VSRT members join the Wheels of Thunder racing team in a joint
training ride on Saturday mornings. The ride starts in downtown Pleasanton at
9:00 am from the parking lot on Neal Street between Main and First. Rides are
usually 40 to 60 miles of varying pace. This means some easy sections and some
hard sections with regrouping at the top of most long climbs. Most routes have
turn-around or bailout points for those wanting shorter or less difficult
versions of the ride. If you cut your ride short, please make sure to let someone
in the group know so they don't wait for you at a regroup point. All riders
are welcome, but are warned that these are not entry-level rides. You should be
"reasonably fit" to keep up with the group. Several groups may form during the
ride depending on who (or who doesn't) show up. The first Saturday of each
month offers several "no-drop" rides. The Pleasanton "no-drop" rides are slower
than the rest of the month (closer to 18 mph) and is a good place for new
riders to start. For details on the route this Saturday e-mail Darryl Smith at
4sm-@attbi.com.
"House of Pain" Ride
Location:
Starts at Park-N-Ride on Rudgear, right off Danville Blvd./Rudgear exit on
680
Start time:
Meet at 8:55am, roll at 9:05am
Finish time:
More or less 1pm
Ride Basics:
Typically 10-30 riders, mix of Strada Sempre Duro and non-Duro members,
mostly racers - or riders who can keep up with racers Usually 65 miles, out to
Livermore up Collier Canyon/Vineyard & back. Fast-paced ride, with one re-group
point at the Livermore gas station.
From the Alto Velo Website.
The Saturday B Ride. The pace of this ride is slower then the A ride on Sunday
s, with an emphasis towards a steady pace with short regroups. If you need
to really hammer, go on the A ride. The B Ride meets at Peet's in Los Altos at
9 am on Saturdays.
Sundays
From the Alto Velo Website. Doesnt say that guest cannot join
The Sunday A Ride. A long, aggressive ride, often with significant climbing.
The route frequently goes out to the coast and back, so if you are unsure
about your fitness, we'd recommend trying the B Ride first. Though the pace may be
fast at times, the ride always regroups at the top of significant climbs. The
group meets at Peet's Coffee in Los Altos at 8:30 am, Sundays.
The Berkeley bicycle club ride from Sproul plaza, Cal Berkeley campus (not a
formal BBC organized ride)
Time 9:00 am
A mixed group will ride between 30-40 miles. The pace varies

The route has changed somewhat over the years, and now winds its way through Portola Valley, and out Canada road through Woodside. Riders typically contest hot spot sprints at the Woodside town line, and the end of Canada road.
Some of the VSRT members join the Wheels of Thunder racing team in a joint training ride on Saturday mornings. The ride starts in downtown Pleasanton at 9:00 am from the parking lot on Neal Street between Main and First. Rides are usually 40 to 60 miles of varying pace. This means some easy sections and some hard sections with regrouping at the top of most long climbs. Most routes have turn-around or bailout points for those wanting shorter or less difficult versions of the ride. If you cut your ride short, please make sure to let someone in the group know so they don't wait for you at a regroup point. All riders are welcome, but are warned that these are not entry-level rides. You should be "reasonably fit" to keep up with the group. Several groups may form during the ride depending on who (or who doesn't) show up. The first Saturday of each month offers several "no-drop" rides. The Pleasanton "no-drop" rides are slower than the rest of the month (closer to 18 mph) and is a good place for new riders to start. For details on the route this Saturday e-mail Darryl Smith at 4sm-@attbi.com.&l
