Everyone
1st everyone has right to do what they want with in
the rules but...
On the Mt Bike side....most of the "clubs" like DOD,
COTA, COMA, ect...are NOT into racing their interest
is riding and trail use issue's.
Besides myself and Petr at Hood there are no no multi
race promoters in mountain.
The races are all over Oregon.
We didn't loose races/events because of one group
trying to control the sport...we had promoters get
burned out, got married, got jobs, ect... and we lost
places/events due to land use issue's...promoters such
as myself and Petr put on multi events, so there will
be a full season of racing...there are still new
events too such as the Outback Challenge in Lakeview.
Also seems like most clubs are based out of Portland,
so there would be ever more Portland races.
Plus there are only so many weekends...currently there
are events I think 300 some racing days a year.
OBRA and most current promoters have done a great job
trying not to have more then one like kind event on
the same weekend.
More events the smaller the race field and it helps no
one to divide up racers.
Look at other states we already have way more racing
then most states.
We are lucky to live in Oregon and have OBRA.

is blessed with some really great event
producers/promoters... but
there does seem to be a waning of community
participation... and
perhaps a waning sense of ownership of these events
within our own
community.
I'm not sure if it's relevant... and I'm not sure
that there's a causal
connection... but our neighbor to the North used to
have a great racing
schedule with races every weekend in places like
Bellingham, Tacoma,
Port Angeles, Bellevue, "Tri-cities", Yakima,
Carnation... and the
local promoters have all but dried up and blown
away. Almost all races
in Washington are now put on by just a couple of
promoters.
Lastly, spreading out the race development and
promotion in the clubs
didn't just spread the responsibility for racing
around... it spread
race production knowledge and a sense of community
throughout cycling
in Oregon. That may have been the most important
part of that old
fashioned way we used to do things.
So, there it is. I'm pretty sure that a limited
number of "expert"
promoters can do a more efficient and slicker job of
providing us their
races. What we lose in that efficiency is ownership
of our sport. We
also lose the sense of community involvement that
makes bicycle racing
a uniquely personal and civil sport.
