Bryan Curry

2005-04-26

"You are old, father Bryan," the young man said,

   "And your hair has become very grey;

And yet you incessantly sprint at the head--

   Do you know, at your age, what they say?"

"In my youth," father Bryan replied to his son,

   "I feared it might tarnish my fame;

But, now that I'm perfectly sure I have none,

   Why, I set pace then crank it aflame."

"You are old," said the youth, "as I mentioned before,

   And your arms are most uncommonly slim;

Yet you echeloned and firmly closed the door--

   Pray how do you make it so grim?"

"In my youth," said his father, "with a team I signed,

   Reviewed each race with the d.s.;

And the draft specialty, which he gave to my mind,

   Allows me to ride with finesse."

"You are old," said the youth, "and your legs look too weak

   For anything steeper than flat;

Yet you shattered the field, in spite of a slow leak--

   Pray, how did you manage to do that?"

"In my youth," said the sage, as he shook his grey locks,

   "I kept all my limbs very supple

By the use of this ointment - twelve dollars a box--

   Allow me to sell you a couple?"

"You are old," said the youth, "many you have outflew

   Though your wheel is steady it brings much grief

'Cos you trackstood your bike on the top of turn two--

   Can't all this raise ethical belief?"

"I have answered three questions, and that is enough,"

   Said his father. "Don't be such a pain!

Do you think I can listen all day to such stuff?

   Pull through, or I'll flick you off train.

What "ethical questions" does it raise for you? Are you insinuating that "old guys" who are faster than you must have some sort of "medical program", or are you suggesting a return to the "true amateur" model wherein training itself is unethical and manual laborers should thus be excluded from races due to an unfair advantage?
