Okay, here's the RR cancellation scoop.

There was some pretty spectacular lightening out on the coarse and they

stopped all fields in Waitsburg. The town opened their arms and let them

in to a few of the buildings on main street there and even offered many

of them free coffee. When it was determined that the risk was too great

(I guess from more lightening), the told everyone that they could then

ride their bikes back to the finish line. Okay, there's something wrong

with this last little piece if you ask me but that's the scoop I got.

No, no delay from a crash in the Master's filed. There was a scary moment when a stray Fred cyclist crossed the street at the left hand turn, but no one went down, all managad to get around it that I was aware of.

I did get a little inside scoop on the guy you were asking about. He had a seizure (pre- existing condition,) that caused him to crash. He was whisked away in the ambulance as you saw, but I didn't hear anything else.

The full moon practiced it's magic all over "Walla Wetta/Crasha." I'd love to see any photos from the adventure in Waitsburg....

The RR was halted due to severe lightening on the course. It was stopped 20 miles into the race, but just before the second of 4 big climbs. The Master's field was waiting in Waitsburg for well over an hour when the decision was made to cancel. The Women 1-2-3 and Men 4-5 waited not quiite as long. The plan was to restart when the weather cleared, which it did get better but there were still severe storm cells in the area so the decision was made to cancel the stage. The riders were cleared to return to WW, about 18 miles or so when the weather was safe to proceed. I am told the women rode through a dust storm just prior to the lighting and the winds were pretty severe.

The rains were torrential there for quite some time and the risk of mud on the road from the adjoining fields was also deemed to be a hazard, as well as lots of standing water on the road. The temps also had dropped from the mid 60's to the upper 40's in a very short period of time.

The Women 4 and Men 3 never did start and in fact were at the start line when many of the riders returned from Waitsburg and they were surprised that things had been called off. The weather in WW was not nearly as severe as what was going on out in the country side.

The decision to call off the RR was a correct one in my estimation. Some groups had breakaways in them that would have been hard to account for. I did not hear one complaint about the decision to call it off. It was just plain dangerous.

As for the crits, yes many crashes. I believe the only fields not to have one were the Women 4 and the Master men, despite what an earlier post mentioned. I was in that field and if there was a crash it was minor and not enough that it was brought to our attention by the officials. Perhaps someone just sliding out or something. The excess energy in the fields most certainly contributed to the crashes, but field size really was not an issue. The course can handle a big field if people just watch what they are doing.

WW is a great event and this year just got stuck with some bad luck with the weather. If that storm cell was 5 miles to the east no one would have experienced a thing. That's racing......

course and yes, a crash in the Masters as well.

Props to Terri Camp who was the head official on the

The rider from Benaroya, Andy Luhn, in the Cat 3 crit suffered 1 broken & 2 cracked ribs. He was knocked unconscious for about a minute after the crash. I talked with him last night and he was doing ok.

Heard there was another serious injury but not sure who or when it happened.

There was a 2-person crash in the women 1-3's that they stopped the race for,

(somebody did an endo coming out of the left turn) with 2 laps to go. We rode

around in circles for 10 minutes or so, then they re-started it with 3 laps to

go. It was a weird dynamic, making it basically a 3 lap race, but that's bike

racing I guess. At least one of the crash victims was later seen

walking away,

not sure how the other one fared. The pro,1,2 men also neutralized for

a lap or

so because of a crash, but didn't stop the race. Apparently the Masters, and

possibly the juniors, were the only ones able to keep the rubber side down

yesterday!

I don't know about the seriously injured guy, I hope he is okay.
