SAN DIEGO VELODROME TO HOST PREMIER BICYCLE RACE
San Diego, California (February 12, 2001) Big time bicycle racing is
coming to San Diego.
The American Velodrome Challenge, a nine-venue bicycle track racing
series, makes it's world debut at the San Diego Velodrome March 31- April 1.
Expected to compete are many of the country's best bicycle racers, both men
and women, in track racing's most exciting events.
"The American Velodrome Challenge will be the biggest and most
competitve event to come to San Diego in quite some time," says Steve
Meiche, executive director of the San Diego Velodrome Association. "We're
expecting two days of incredible racing."
Unlike road racing where spectators may see the racers only once, in
track racing all of the action takes place in front of the stands. And with
packs of riders turning laps at over 40 miles an hour anything can happen.
Plus, stakes are high. Riders will be competing not only for cash
prizes but also for points toward rankings that assist USA Cycling coaches
determine future U.S. National Cycling Teams and athletes for upcoming
international races.
In addition to San Diego, the American Velodrome Challenge will travel
the country this spring and summer to eight other velodromes. For more
information on the series and San Diego's schedule of events log onto the
Internet at www.americantrackracing.com
The San Diego Velodrome is a 26-degree banked, 333-meter oval track

cycling programs and recreational riding which is open to the public every
