Last Friday, several of us attended Jeff's memorial service. For those

of you who were not able to attend, I would like to share a great piece

of prose that Jeff wrote and which I think says it all.

~Kris

The Ride

"Twisting, turning, swooping through the bramble and towering pines on a

narrow path to a place far away. Rush down the trail, stay back, set the

rear wheel, hook right then left. An endless dance with gravity and body

in perfect balance. The next turn, gravity wins, the thighs burn, lungs

gasp and worries drop like sweat from the brow. Harmony, peace and

nature meet in your tired soul where yesterday, today and tomorrow all

become one. In that wonderful moment, the soul regenerates. Ah, to ride,

to live, to love... never easy, always fighting for balance and a

surprise around every bend. Let's go ride."

For my ridin' buds

I knew Jeff Johnson professionally for about 5 years. I did not even know he

was a cyclist until a few months ago. I never go a chance to ride or race with

him, we had planned to do that at the Mt. Hood Cycling Classic next month.

From what I have been reading, it seems as though he had a pretty big impact on

the cycling community. I have to tell you, for those of you that only knew him

as a rider, the impact he had in his professional life was tremendous. Jeff

was Executive Director of the New Buildings Institute and spent his days as a

tireless advocate of energy conservation and energy efficiency in buildings. I

served on several committees with Jeff and got to witness his leadership,

charisma, and passion first hand. He had a real talent for uniting diverse groups

of people. His impact was national, and energy professions across the country

are mourning the loss of one of their great leaders. Jeff truly made a

difference with his life.

I am very sorry to inform you of the loss of one of our fellow OBRA racers. Jeff Johnson of White Salmon was killed last week while mountain biking in Lyle Wa.

He rode for Discover Cycles out of Hood River and had bike raced for many years. Although I did not know Jeff well, I knew him as a fierce competitor and a friendly person who always had a good word to say.

There will be a memorial service Friday at 3:00 pm at Gardners Funeral Home in White Salmon. I will be wearing a black armband at Pickets Charge this weekend, and future races to signify my respect for Jeff and acknowledge the loss of one of our own.
