One idea that I really, really like is having a short, easy Cat 4/5 race at PIR like Jeff Mitchem has done this year. Getting good results helps keep racers motivated and coming back for more races.

I do not see an issue. If you feel that way, just race in the 1,2,3 event.

Why foreclose others the opportunity to race with the 4,5's.

Last year I don't remember so many races that gave cat 3 riders the choice

of

riding with the 1/2/3 field or riding with the 4/5 field. at the cherry road

race, some guys in the 3/4/5 field were trying to put together a nice big

pace line. (about 15 or 20 deep) to catch the front pack, but all the 5's

who didn't know how to work a pace line, just sorta got in the way, and tore

it all apart. it might have just been me, but i think just having PIR 1/2/3

and 4/5 might be a better idea? wasn't that the way it was last year? i

don't want to put anyone down, i love cycling and love promoting the sport.

just keeping things on the even, or at least the same as last year might be

better. thanks for the thought and the time.

Two Observations:

1) 15 to 20 man pace lines don't work in any race be it Cherry Pie or Tour

de France

2) Your frustration is exactly why cat IIIs race with I-IIs occasionally

when given the choice...so they don't have to put up with cat Vs who don't

know what they are doing (yet) and fall down a lot.

Thanks for your input on the grouping of the Cherry Pie race Scott. First, I

had expected about 100 people to the race, thinking it was the first race of

the season and some cat 3 have been slacking all winter and wanted a slower

field, while others looking to upgrade, or want to really test there fitness

could have a bigger challenge by riding in a faster group. 244 riders showed

up! Generally one can predict 10 percent of OBRA riders will show up for any

race. With the fewest numbers of 1 and 2's and 5's I decided to split the 3

group. I have not done the counting on participants in any category, but next

year I may run a seperate 1,2 and a 3, and a 4, 5 field. With OBRA rules of

a field limit of 100, and we had 81 in the 1,2,3 field that was split, a

straight 1,2,3 field would have been too big.

I will file your concerns-thoughts with the others for the race for

consideration of next year's event.
