some front wheels do have a "forward" direction

tri-spokes have an airfoil shape.

some, like the Mavic's have hubs that care which way

they go.

I was always taught that the label should face right

side up when viewed from the riding position, and if

properly built the label and the valve hole would line

up too.

I think the mechanic is correct. I have a pair of these wheels - and

had my hub loosen or "unthread". I received the same advice - run the

wheel in the correct, or forward, direction. I suppose if one were

vigilant about watching to make sure the hub stays tight or uses a small

amount of Loctite - it would be okay to run backward. In general, the

principle seems similar to pedal and bottom bracket threads.
