FW: Giving cat 3's a choice is it bad????

David Johnson

2001-02-23

     I think giving Cat.3's a choice in RR's between 1,2,3 or 3,4,5 is an

excellent choice, especially in the early season races. When I was a 3 I

always looked forward to racing in the combined 1,2,3 races since the pace

was a bit faster and the size of the group much bigger. Now I am a 2 and I

like having the 3's in the early season races for the same reason: a bigger

field. Racing with 50-60 Cat. 1,2,3's in a RR is more enjoyable than racing

with 15-20 1,2's.

Some people I know have raised issues over whether or not Cat. 3's

should be able to race with the 1,2's because of a lack of bike handling

skills. In a RR, unlike a crit, bike handling skills are not put to the test

as much.

Deciding whether or not to go 1,2 or 1,2,3 in smaller local RR's should

be decided on whether or not there is a big enough group of 1,2's at the

event. From last years results and from what I have heard (I was out of the

country all year) it seems that the 1,2 fields were extremely small (15-20

riders). This is not good from both the racing standpoint and also, in my

opinion, an organizing standpoint. Who wants the "fastest" group of the day

to be the smallest?

If 1,2's can field enough riders then I see no reason to have the 3's

combined, but currently not enough 1,2's are showing up to race. Maybe there

isn't enough 1,2's around, or more 3's should upgrade.....on that topic

maybe more prize money/merchandise should be part of the 1,2 event..? That's

another topic all together...

Scott.

I'm relatively new at this, so if I'm stepping on cycling tradition let me

know.

The Cherry Pie race was the first race I have ever participated in, and I

had more fun than I ever expected. I ride with a few friends that I work

with. We train at lunch and sometimes on the weekend, but as far as race

strategy and race experience we are complete rookies. We went to the race

and signed up as Cat 5. My experience with the pack was limited, since I

was the unlucky dog that had a flat 6 miles in (thanks again to the Cat 1,2

guys that let me suck a wheel as they lapped me), but I went into the race

very intimidated by the potential dangers. During that first 6 miles I

smelled burning rubber at least 3 times and the pack sped up and slowed down

for no apparent reason. At first I was a little frustrated, but as I was

talking with the guy next to me about it he said "hey, this is how Cat 5

packs go". I settled in, spread it out a little and relaxed, at least until

the flat took me out.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that if you choose to ride with rookies

like myself and my team mates, then expect rookie behavior and rookie

mistakes. We are all learning. I had a great time even though I rode most

of the race alone. My buddies, Devin Simpson and Brandon Pierce had a

little more fun. They finished 1st and 3rd. Not to bad for rookies.
