Thanks for your comments.
A few points of clarification might ease your pain.
- At PIR this year the categories will be Cat 4/5, Cat 3/4, Cat 1/2/3
- This change was made in response to comments received last year from Cat
5s and Cat 4s (the younger and slower among us) who thought they should have
a separate category. I agreed.
- Therefore, Cat 5 will not race with Cat 3.
- Cat 4 will have the choice to ride "up" with Cat 3 or "down" with Cat 5.
Historically, this is common.
- Cat 3 will have the choice to ride "up" with the Cat 1/2 or "down" with
Cat 4. Historically, this is also common.
- Choice is good.
- PIR has been run for 20+ years and has always offered more than two races
- last year was an exception due to low turn-out.
- The primary purpose of PIR is to provide an exceptionally safe venue for
racers to learn and get better. We have always taken the opportunity (and it
has been well supported) to allow some co-mingling of categories (within
safe parameters) to help the younger, lower category riders learn.

don't remember so many races that gave cat 3 riders the choice of
riding with the 1/2/3 field or riding with the 4/5 field. at the cherry road
race, some guys in the 3/4/5 field were trying to put together a nice big
pace line. (about 15 or 20 deep) to catch the front pack, but all the 5's
who didn't know how to work a pace line, just sorta got in the way, and tore
it all apart. it might have just been me, but i think just having PIR 1/2/3
and 4/5 might be a better idea? wasn't that the way it was last year? i
don't want to put anyone down, i love cycling and love promoting the sport.
just keeping things on the even, or at least the same as last year might be
better. thanks for the thought and the time.
