Good feedback. The cloth numbers cost OBRA almost $18,000 per year. I
can't see adding to that expense.

How about laminated frame numbers on heavy stock (like they use for
licenses and whatnot) with a rectangular hole on the top and left edges,
through which pass velcro straps - one for the head tube and one for the
top tube (or seatpost and seat rails?). A set of 2 issued to a rider,
good for life as long as they keep their membership current. Order them
in bulk and get a huge roll of double-sided 1" velcro strip that's hook
on one side and loop on the other.

I can't resist replying to this. Up here in Washington,
somebody this
year had the bright idea that we would use frame numbers.
First, you
cannot mount them in the same place on all frames (consider
the compact
frame of a small woman vs. a standard 60 cm frame, for
example). On my
bike, I have to put the frame number on my seat post, which
means it's
obscured during half of my pedal stroke. Second, it is difficult to
attach these, and you don't want them to be permanent
because you don't
always want to race with them on your bike (stage races, for
example,
or if you race in another state). They get blown around in the wind
when you put your bike on your roof rack and are susceptible to
cracking and breaking. I don't recommend this solution!
