We don't need no stink'n prizes.
Personally I would like to see:
1st place = a hug from Candi Murray
2nd place = a hand shake from Mike Murray
3rd place = a pat on the back from Splinter
Championship events:
1st place = a kiss on the cheek from Candi Murray
2nd place = a hug from Mike Murray
3rd place = a hand shake from Splinter
Then all participants shake hands and go out for beers.<<
I've never gotten the hang of the $ thing, either...no other amateur sports
that I've participated in (running, triathlon) seem to require a guaranteed
payout to winners in order to get participation. (Nor do timetrials, as a
matter of fact: case in point, JFTT.)
Cash prizes do NOTHING to increase participation so far as I can see - the
people who aren't participating, who we (keep saying we) are trying to GET
to participate, know they aren't going to be able to walk into a race and
win anything. One could wonder how much THAT expectation ("other people will
win money and I won't, so I'm just a chump who's feeding money to the top
guys") hinders participation.
There is a certain humor, though, in watching Jamie prostitute an entire
race for a $5 prime (-: - so perhaps financial rewards have their place.
If I upgrade, can I have a hug from Splinter?
