If it's just for winter training you should just get an old-school road bike
that has a 5-7 speeds and downtube shifters. Most of these bikes used a
freewheel so you just rip off the deraileurs, shifters, and freewheel.
Stick on a track cog and you're off. You get a rear brake, and more room
for fenders, too.
