I was there, on my way to the short track races, he was not associated with the races going on. It was about seven I think, I didn't see other racers because it was getting so late, I was running late too. He was not wearing a helmet, and although he would have been hurting even with a helmet on with that kind of crash, it looked to me that it was his head injury that really took him out. His heart kept beating but his head took too much impact. I'm sad that he wasn't able or informed enough to wear a helmet, not that you can prevent a crazy driver from messing you up if that is what happened.
A lot of us bike to PIR right around there, you cross the I-5 ramp heading westbound to get over to the raceway after you leave delta park. He was down when I first saw him, so I don't know if he was crossing the way I was or if he had turned onto the ramp, his body was on the start of the ramp but he did get thrown a ways. I came upon him as he lie in the road, and a few cars actually went around his body and kept going, besides the perps that hit him and took off.

The article said he was a transient, not that it makes it any less tragic. I am not sure helmets help much when the front end of a car t-bones you at high speed unless you have them strapped all over your body.

I think it happened before the races; and my understanding is that he did not appear to be a racer. Don't know if it would have made a difference, but I don't think he had a helmet (Don't quote me!) (I just talked briefly with someone who attended to him before the emergency people got there.)
