The article said he was a transient, not that it makes it any less
tragic. I am not sure helmets help much when the front end of a car
t-bones you at high speed unless you have them strapped all over your
body.

I think it happened before the races; and my understanding is that he
did not appear to be a racer. Don't know if it would have made a
difference, but I don't think he had a helmet (Don't quote me!) (I just
talked briefly with someone who attended to him before the emergency
people got there.)
