RE: Autographed Tom Boonen helmet for sale to help

Schreck, George

I find it odd that you allege that people took it the wrong way when you

admitted in your e-mail that it was going to start a fire. That

statement alone invited the responses you received. If you recall, one

of the supposed "idiots" was Norrene herself. Now you have managed to

insult everyone who defended Norrene. You really cannot help yourself

can you? You must be very talented to be able to pedal your bicycle

with your foot in your mouth.

for the idiots who took my e-mail the wrong way. And you know who you

are.

I didn't insult noreene for her funding raising efforts or for

supporting cycling. i never said "she was doing a bad thing"! I also

didn't insult team rubicon. they are great guys and i enjoy racing

against them.

I posed a question of why she runs a developmental team and very few of

the riders are from the USA. She does great things for the LAF and

cycling in general, and has the added benefit of fundraising dollars

from three Nike employees. Fundraising dollars the rest of us do not

have.

Our team, per our contract cannot support cyclists under the age of 25.

They wrote the rules, we just follow them.

As far as our support and fundraising efforts, we also donate to the

LAF. We do this by selling Jerseys and socks, with 100% of the profit

supporting the Live Strong campaign.

Ok, I can see this thread getting real ugly real fast....So I'll

What I think we all "really" want to know is: Why did "4" members of

Team Rubicon crash in the 1/2 field Sunday in Vancouver?????

Seriously.....Coincidence??? Equipment failure???

Not that I want to start a fire either, but what a piss ant thing to

say. Why contribute to making the world an even more cynical place by

taking something good and charitable and belittling it? It doesn't

reflect well on you or the Guiness Cycling team. What would reflect

well is an apology.

Not to start a fire, but why should we donate money to send new

zealanders to worlds? What about our own US riders from right here in

Oregon. Especially OBRA's juniors and U23's. Shouldn't they get

support first to go to nat's and large events? What I don't understand

is why Noreene spends so much time and money on non-US riders? There is

alot of young talent here in the Pac Northwest that could benfit from

team Rubicon.

Hi Obraland~

I want to thank everyone for all the donations everyone has made to LAF

and support in years pass for Team Rubicon. I and the riders on Team

Rubicon

really truly appreciate it.

A week and a half ago, I just found out that one of our riders, Aaron

Tuckerman was named to the New Zealand's U23 world Mt. Bike team. Aaron

has been training hard this year and I want to do everything I can

possibly do to get him there. So with that said, I have been saving a

special raffle item for next year's Rubicon raffle and would like to

offer it up now to help fund Aaron's airline ticket to Milan Italy

($1,400 USD).

I have one authentic autographed Tom Boonen helmet generously donated by

Lazer helmets to be auctioned off to the highest bidder( I have photos

if

anyone wants to see them). The money donated is tax deductible and 100%

of

all money donated will go directly to Aaron to help him get to worlds.

If you are wondering why doesn't the New Zealand Federation help out?

Well

they are even a smaller federation than USA cycling, therefore we,

Rubicon

need to cover all expenses such as airfare, food, hotel, transportation

and other miscellaneous items so Aaron can compete. This is a huge

opportunity for Aaron and if any business's want to step up and make an

offer on Boonen's helmet, we will gladly put your logo on Aaron's

helmet.

Thank you in advance for taking the time to consider my request. Auction

ends August 6th, 2005. Please send bids to noreneg-@comcast.net

<mailto:norenegodfrey%40comcast.net> or

call 503-806-2215.

Cheers

Norrene

Actually without addressing the merits of who to support or not support,

it is money raised by Norrene from activities or from her sponsors. As a

result, she can see fit to support any riders she wishes as long as her

sponsors do not object and she is clear about where the money is going

when she asks people to participate in her fund raising activities, as

she has done.

She does not have to justify her efforts (although she did quite well),

and she should be commended for the effort she expends without expecting

anything in return. As one who often picks on Norrene for what I think

is good-natured sport, we should give her a break.

If you do not like the use to which she puts the money, do not

participate, or to paraphrase Mike Murray's rule, put on your own

funding raising promotion.

Dave,

I support young athletes regardless if they are blue, red or pink.

Aaron saved his money last year so he could come to Oregon to race

because he heard about what a great place this is.

Aaron also has been working hard to raise money for the Lance Armstrong

Foundation, he leads our Monday night coffee rides, which encourages

beginning cyclist to ride their bikes. Also, Aaron drops what he is

doing when Candi needs him and help's officiating at an event (one's you

have raced in, maybe you didn't see him turning lap cards).

Just for the record here is my U23 line up for 2005:

Dean Tracy born in Texas

Walker Starr born in Wisconsin USA and who is currently living in Oregon

for the next 3 years to get a degree from PSU

Traci Caroll born in Hermiston Oregon

Eugene Checerine, born in the USA

Scott Allen, New Zealand

Aaron Tuckerman New Zealand

Now to continue on with your below mention statement. . . . . Let see, I

have sent Traci Carroll to NORBA National series, sent Dean Tracy to U23

US road National, Walker Starr to US Road Nationals, helped out Mikkel

Bossen with housing at superweek and take him when I can to events that

our team goes to -oh and by the way, he is not even on Team Rubicon but

I help him out. I still help out Solomon Woras who is not on Rubicon

anymore. Rubicon picked up Craig Wilcox and Josh Kerhkof, last year

because RMS folded ( I had no budget to do that, but did anyway)- they

where left with out any $$ to go to U23 National and with out equipment

to compete on. I paid for them out of my own pocket so they would have

an opportunity to finish the season, both of them signed with Pro teams.

Rubicon help's direct young junior riders to Fred Meyers, BBC and to

Nathan Hobson's team as their programs are much better than we could

ever put together.

How much have you and your Guinness team done to help young talented

Northwest riders?

help rider go to Worlds

Hi Obraland~

I want to thank everyone for all the donations everyone has made

to LAF

and support in years pass for Team Rubicon. I and the riders on

Team Rubicon

really truly appreciate it.

A week and a half ago, I just found out that one of our riders,

Aaron

Tuckerman was named to the New Zealand's U23 world Mt. Bike

team. Aaron

has been training hard this year and I want to do everything I

can

possibly do to get him there. So with that said, I have been

saving a

special raffle item for next year's Rubicon raffle and would

like to

offer it up now to help fund Aaron's airline ticket to Milan

Italy

($1,400 USD).

I have one authentic autographed Tom Boonen helmet generously

donated by

Lazer helmets to be auctioned off to the highest bidder( I have

photos if

anyone wants to see them). The money donated is tax deductible

and 100% of

all money donated will go directly to Aaron to help him get to

worlds.

If you are wondering why doesn't the New Zealand Federation help

out? Well

they are even a smaller federation than USA cycling, therefore

we, Rubicon

need to cover all expenses such as airfare, food, hotel,

transportation

and other miscellaneous items so Aaron can compete. This is a

huge

opportunity for Aaron and if any business's want to step up and

make an

offer on Boonen's helmet, we will gladly put your logo on

Aaron's helmet.

Thank you in advance for taking the time to consider my request.

Auction

ends August 6th, 2005. Please send bids to

noreneg-@comcast.net <mailto:norenegodfrey%40comcast.net>

call 503-806-2215.

Cheers

Even if the the beneficiary of the donation was a tax deductible cause,

which it is not, you would have to subtract the value of the item you

received, which in this case probably would be viewed as equal to the

price in the auction since there is no independent market price with

which to compare. I assume anyone who wants Tom Boonen's old helmet

does not care about the deduction.

Not intending to add any fuel to the fire, but I suspect that winning

the bid for Tom Boonen's autograph, particularly if the money is

earmarked for a specific individual, even if your intent is highly

charitable, is not tax deductible. But, seek the advice of someone

qualified if it matters.

Subject: [OBRA Chat] Autographed Tom Boonen helmet for sale to

help rider go to Worlds

Cheers
