Proper use of categories is a huge issue. It is essential to the functioning of this sport.

Masters' 1-5 should not be viewed as Seniors' 1-5, etc. Masters are older and should be slower.

Some folks can make themselves compete against others, who are 30 years younger, but too much of this causes problems.

For example, those who work 40+ hours, have families, etc. should still have a place for themselves in Bicycle Racing. Balance! If I train adequately, it will be fun to race against Cat 3, in my age group, not in my son's age group.

Respectfully, the average Masters rider should not feel pressured to race against Lance.

Increasing the category separations within the age groups will help people have more fun (so they don't drop out) and maintain balance in their lives.

Thanks for listening and have fun.

Yea, here's what it means:

1. If I race in a 1/2/3 race and I'm a 3 and win, perhaps I'm not really

a 3...

2. If I race in a 2/3 race and I'm a 3 and win, I beg to differ that it

doesn't mean anything. It means that I won in a race against my peers.

Who could expect to win in a race with two categories above them.

Please, that's ridiculous.

I happen to think that it's awesome to get the occasional 2/3 master's

race. It doesn't happen that often so I say hip, hip, hooray to the

organizers of that event. And, I'll bet I'm not the only one that thinks

that way.

The 1's already have a race. Why do they need two? Plus, they have

better than three times the prize money as the Master's race.

While I also respect Mr. Long (even though he spelled my name

incorrectly), I think we have two completely different view on racing.

Some think everyone should be allowed to participate and make the race

as hard as possible (an perhaps limit the number of potential winners),

and other think that races should be structured to give everyone a

chance to win. I doubt any more discussion will bridge the gap, so I am

not going to participate further in the discussion. As a result, given

the lack of consensus, I suppose we should leave it up to the promoters

and not complain either way they choose to structure the fields.

As for Steve and Mark riding off the front. Good for them. They

deserved to win, and it means I need to train harder and improve my

skills,. If they still drop me, hopefully, the training allows me to

get 3rd.

While I respect Mr. Shreck, I just don't get his logic here. Cat 1

riders are not my peers. They never have been and I don't have the time

to put in on the bike to make them my peer. That's like saying that an

11th grader is the peer of a 10th grader. Even the teachers at such a

high school would scoff at such folly.

Here's the definition of the word peer as defined by Random House

Webster's dictionary:

peer [1] (peer) n.

                  1. a person who is the equal of another in

                       abilities, qualifications, age,

                       background, or social status.

And, by racing against the 2's, a cat 3 is racing against better riders,

a category above their peers. We don't have the resources and the

organizers don't have the time to break the categories down a lot

further so we live with such category races.

Nonetheless, I vehemently disagree with you on this George and thus far,

you have not offered up sufficient logic or reasoning to sway my option

no matter how much I respect you as a rider. It's not you I'm trying to

restrict and you beat me up Larch in July by 9 minutes. Sure, if I had

not had a couple of accidents in the last year, one very serious, you

probably would not have beaten me by as much but I'm beating you still

would have beat me.

Take a look at the Vancouver Courthouse crit where Holland and King

where off the front for the entire race and the field could not catch

them. Sure, there was some blocking going on but there was not enough of

his team mates in the race to keep the field from catching him if they

could have actually caught him. I argue that this is not much of a race.

I also argue that the best races are those in which the competition is

the tightest, where the finish is the most hotly contested.

Myself, as an organizer, will do my best to provide racing where as many

people as possible stand a chance at getting some of the prizes offered.

And, unless you are doing some organizing of your own, perhaps you could

just come and try and grab some of those prizes for your very own

instead of beating up those that spend a great deal of time and energy

organizing events for us all to come and race at.

No, you did not win the race against your peers, because you excluded

the better riders within your peer group. It is athletic competition,

and accept the fact that there are always going to be people better than

you, and find goals other than winning the race.   Why are some OBRA

members so afraid of racing against better riders, and why does everyone

think that in order to race, they should have a chance to win or place.

If that is your motivation for racing, you are going to be very

disappointed. There can be many races within a race other than for

first.

I suppose if we take this further, is it no unfair for people who have

responsibilities and cannot train much to have to race against people

who train 15 to 20 hours per week. Also, is it not unfair for someone

who weighs 180 pounds to have to race against someone who weighs 155

pounds in a hilly race. What about people who have coaches and those

who do not, or those who have better equipment such at TT bikes with

disc wheels and those who do not. We could create innumerable

categories. The fact is that it is many of these other factors that

have as much to do with your competitiveness as your Category in a

Masters race.

There is a hole in Steve logic re: excluding Cat 1 riders. Both Holland and

King are Cat 2 riders and will be able to ride in the Twilight Crit. One

can expect them to perform just as well this Friday. For those that argue

that either rider is inappropriately categorized as a 2 when they should be

a 1 I would refer them back to the criteria for upgrade from 2 to 1. I

don't believe either rider has met those criteria.

Sorry to clutter the list?and I know this can be a shark tank ?

?but since I?ve received a few off-line suggestions that indeed there is

a race for me?the Pro/1/2 event, I want to repeat that I CANNOT race ANY

category this Friday for reasons INDEPENDENT of this discussion?even if

Brad offered day-care and diaper primes! ;-)

Go watch the race and sample a local beverage for me! Cheers, Kirk

Until they come up with a category for 50+, works 70 hours a week, trains if lucky 12 hours a week, and enjoys the company of their grandchildren, then I will line up to win against anyone age, cat. or pro who wants to race period. If I win great if I get blown out the back so be it. The sport is soooooo much fun who cares, until someone starts paying me my income to race, I will race anyone.

I never understand the whining about this issue. If someone is

qualified to be a Masters racer based on age, that should be

sufficient.

Essentially, the whining is that these people are too good and we

should not have to compete against people who are two good. Everyone

I think it is ridiculous. It is a race, and may the best man or

It?s a tough job for promoters/administrators to try to maximize

participation and participation opportunity in the context of addressing

the interests of most competitors? desire to compete with peers?which

itself is a balancing act between ?point in life? and ?fastness?

considerations and often dependent on the nature of a given race. There

are always riders who don?t fit or others who are denied opportunity

somehow in someone?s mind (including not allowing lower categories)?no

matter where the performance category or age boundaries are drawn.

A good chunk of the OBRA 1's list could probably downgrade if motivated

to anyway...so I'm not sure whose concerns are being address by having a

2-3 field other than perhaps to keep non-OBRA older 1's from competing

in the Master's race. Heck, there are plenty of Master's 2's (35 and

40+) around here ripping up the P/1/2 races anyway!

It's all a crazy tail-chasing loop IMHO.

Wish I could make it over to race! Good luck and take it easy, Kirk

I've seen the word "excluded" a number of times this week. Who is being

excluded? It appears to me that the 1/2's (any age) have the main stage

Friday night...I know a few of the riders Mike listed and given the

choice, my guess is they would not be racing Masters anyway.

So, what's the big deal? Have a 1/2 race and a race for 3's. Then no

one one gets excluded...oh, except for the 4/5's and Women. But then,

they were already being excluded...oh, and I forgot about the Juniors,

they're being excluded too. Oh wait, I forgot about the tandems.

Now that's exclusion.

Listen, the promoter has the option of choosing the fields, that's his

perogative. Who are we to say what he should or shouldn't do? When you

promote your own race you can do whatever you like. Until then, we

should be happy there are people like Brad that are willing to put up

with this crap and give us quality races to compete in.

I never understand the whining about this issue. If someone is

qualified to be a Masters racer based on age, that should be

sufficient.

Essentially, the whining is that these people are too good and we

I think it is ridiculous. It is a race, and may the best man or

To paraphrase a statement I read a few days ago on this list, OBRA grows

(grew) due to Inclusiveness, not by excluding. 1?s, 2?s and many 3?s

are at their categories because they race a lot. It would seem that a

large number of 4?s and 5?s would be a bigger-better ?market? for

promoters but I would bet that the majority of them are 4?s and 5?s

because they race infrequently, many just once or twice a year. Those

4?s who race a lot become 3?s quickly.

If I was a master 4 I would stay far a way from a master 3/4 races as

many masters 3?s are really 2?s who avoid racing 3?s to avoid an upgrade

thus exclusion from races. The best Masters races in the state are 35+

and have a 1/2/3 field and a 4/5 field. Division by age as in 35+ and

45+ is pointless as there are many 1?s, 2, and ?hiding? 3?s in both age

groups, if I was a 4 or 5 master I would stay away from both age groups

and race 4/5?s or not race at all. A 50+ group is meaningless too

looking at David Zimbelman?s 53:37 St. TT time, very nice by the way.

I have become increasingly frustrated with OBRA or Promoters, you pick,

with the exclusion of ?me? and others from many races around the state

by restricting Masters to 3/4 or by making it 40+. I have been

contemplating quitting racing due to this. For my team, by excluding me

and Glen you also exclude our other masters racers that are 3?s because

we/they want to race together, and sometimes we even race as a team.

(and 4 people car pooling helps with the price of gas) So by trying to

exclude 2 of us you lose 4 or more from just our team, and our team is

small.

I don?t have time to train for the distance in the majority of 1/2 races

so my participation will be very limited to none. No, I don?t expect to

win any races, but as Brad put it, I don?t want my ?ass? handed to me on

the first hill or before I even finish the first lap, that would be a

waste of time, gas, entry fee, wear on my car, etc. I do like to be

reasonably competitive or what?s the point of racing, then it would be

OBTA, Oregon Bicycle Touring Association.

Besides with every race having a different master?s breakdown it makes

the Master BAR pointless.

This is probably the only thing I see that is better in California, 35+

Masters A, B, and C. Or to make it simpler for Oregon EVERY race 35+

open or if the promoter has the man/woman power and time, 35+ with a

1/2/3 and a 4/5 field. We could define 1/2/3 as A and 4/5 as B. It

would give the ?Slow? masters a place to be competitive and the ?Fast?

masters a challenging race without loosing your job, family, etc. Every

race around the state the same, constancy for once would be great!

I have the feeling I am going to be torn apart now;-)

Of the other districts I've raced in it's always been 35+ 1/2/3 and I

don't ever recall anyone having concerns they were having to race

against a Cat. 1. Heck, I've never even heard of concerns with the

occasional 30+ race that shows up on the schedule. I always saw it as an

opportunity to improve while getting my ass handed to me.

On the same note and with our supremely stacked field at Cascade this

year there were a number of concerns regarding having to race against

"pro master's" like Sir Kirk of Willett et. al... Some relatively strong

Cat 3's even chose to race the 2/3 category because they felt it would

be an easier race! BTW, The top 10 GC was all 1's. I say if you buy your

ticket you should kinda know what you're getting yourself into,

especially when start lists are posted ahead of time.

Being a Cat 2 myself I'm a little dismayed at the trend towards only

offering lower category Master's categories to the point I may ask for a

downgrade. I occasionally like to mix it up wit' da big boys in a crit

but I stand nary a chance of even hanging in a long or hilly RR. I don't

have the time or youth anymore and probably never had the genetics.

I say to the mutants that are over 35 and still able to win/place/show

in a Pro/1/2 race, WAY TO FRICKIN' GO! If said mutants want to come

out and mix it up with the old farts their own age I say let 'em.

Improve the heard and get shelled in the process.

I'm might be wading into a shark tank here.being a 35+ Cat. 1 (but can't

race Friday in any category)...so I'll try to keep it simple. ;-)

What are the rules regarding down-grading from a 1 to a 2 or up-grading

from a 2 to a 1? Is there mandatory administrative involvement either

way?

What does anyone think the intent is on stopping at Master's 1's but not

cutting 2's as well and having a Master's 3's-4's, a 4's-5's, or a

3's-4's-5's event? There appears to be more than three times the number

of 4's or 5's than 2's. Having the Master's 2's race Pro/1/2 would seem

to make more sense membership numbers wise and might additionally be

slightly more sporting in the participation opportunity sense than just

barring 1's.

Just a couple questions/thoughts.

Best of luck to everyone on this fun-filled crit-fest weekend! Cheers,

To Mark, I say: Damn you! I wanted to make those points! I couldn't agree

more. If you're a 45 year old Cat. 1 like Kent Bostick, then race with the

Cat. 1's. If you're a 37 year old guy holding a Cat. 1 license because you

may have once been fast enough but haven't justified that ranking for the

last few years, then maybe it's time to either downgrade or simply suck it

up when a promoter chooses to exclude your category in a race. If a promoter

wants to make the Masters field Cat 2/3 - thus alienating the few Cat 1's in

favor of all the Cat 3's that won't be discouraged by the speedsters - then

so be it.

To Mike, I say: Agreed with all your points except one. Are you sure Oregon

has (22) 35+ Cat 1's? Candi just granted a Cat 2 downgrade this week for

reasons strikingly similar to those stated above.

To George, I say: It's great to finally read your opinion on a matter

concerning the OBRA community.

See you all Friday!

certain groups of people even if we are racing for ten through 20. That

Maybe if more people had that attitude, we would have better

participation at road races generally, as people would not worry who

So by this line of reasoning shouldn't a good result be also diminished

by

the fact that younger riders are not permitted? Or riders from a

faster

category? Or male riders? Races entries are generally restricted based

several different characteristics. Age, ability, gender, type of

equipment

allowed or a combination of these are all commonly used. Which ones and

how

they are arranged is up to the race organizer. In this case the problem

occurred because there was a change made from the original announcement.

Personally I take more of a market view on this subject. There are 22

OBRA

members who are 35+ and are Cat. 1. This means that changing the

previously

published restrictions would be catering to the maximum 3 or 4 riders

that

would show up at the risk of upsetting the larger number of riders that

are

in the slower categories. There are 1,112 OBRA members that are 35+ and

are

not Cat. 1 (Cat.2-103, Cat.3-287, Cat.4-352, Cat.5-370). For the race

organizer who is generally trying to sell entry fees it would make sense

to

sell to the larger market. Given that the presence of the faster

category

riders inhibits participation by the slower category riders and that

there

are so many more slower category riders I think it is amazing that race

organizer ever bother to put on races for the faster categories.

Just go out and race your bike to be the best you can be, for the time you have to put into it.

You can only get results if you put the effort in, and Mr Zimbelman proves it does not matter what age you are!!

I think everyone should focus on what they can do, not on what everyone esle is doing, as George has pointed out. If someone says you are too good to do a race, take it as a compliment :)

I've not been told too many times that I'm too fast to do a crit!!

It just seems to me that we keep defining categories more narrowly to

give more people a chance to win or place, and I do not feel that should

be the point. I would prefer a top 10 or 15 in a very strong field than

a top five in a very weak one.

I don't see any reason why Age Categories and Ability Categories need to

be

mutually exclusive. It certainly seems reasonable to me to use a

combination of age and ability to define a field restriction. If you

are

only concerned with competing with the people around you then why not

just

start everyone all together?

My view is that you either have Ability Categories or Age Categories,

and

qualify in that basis. If there is only one Masters race and you meet

the

age criteria, you get to race.

In running, most of the field does not have a hope of winning. They race

against the portion of the field in which they are competitive and do

not

worry about the rest. Cycling is the only sport that I see where

participants think they all should have a chance to win or place. When

I

race, if there are some superior riders, I do not worry about them and

focus

on racing against those where I have a chance. I realize that means I

am

giving up on a higher placing, but I gauge success as beating certain

groups

of people even if we are racing for ten through 20. That is life at the

Mt.

Hood Stage race, Elk horn and Cascade for most of us. Maybe if more

people

had that attitude, we would have better participation at road races

generally, as people would not worry who shows up or if the course is

hilly.

I never understand the whining about this issue. If someone is

qualified to

be a Masters racer based on age, that should be sufficient.

Essentially, the whining is that these people are too good and we should

not

have to compete against people who are two good. Everyone should be

mediocre so we can be competitive.

I think it is ridiculous. It is a race, and may the best man or woman

Frankly, I see having a good result when the best riders are not allowed

Don't worry Brad, we all love you. The rules say the promoter can define

Personally, I think If someone is stil holding onto their Cat 1, they

To Mark, I say: Damn you! I wanted to make those points! I couldn't agree more. If you're a 45 year old Cat. 1 like Kent Bostick, then race with the Cat. 1's. If you're a 37 year old guy holding a Cat. 1 license because you may have once been fast enough but haven't justified that ranking for the last few years, then maybe it's time to either downgrade or simply suck it up when a promoter chooses to exclude your category in a race. If a promoter wants to make the Masters field Cat 2/3 - thus alienating the few Cat 1's in favor of all the Cat 3's that won't be discouraged by the speedsters - then so be it.

To Mike, I say: Agreed with all your points except one. Are you sure Oregon has (22) 35+ Cat 1's? Candi just granted a Cat 2 downgrade this week for reasons strikingly similar to those stated above.

To George, I say: It's great to finally read your opinion on a matter concerning the OBRA community.

See you all Friday!

Masters race.

I never understand the whining about this issue. If someone is qualified to

be a Masters racer based on age, that should be sufficient.

Essentially, the whining is that these people are too good and we should not

have to compete against people who are two good. Everyone should be

mediocre so we can be competitive.

I think it is ridiculous. It is a race, and may the best man or woman win.

Frankly, I see having a good result when the best riders are not allowed to

participate to be a lesser accomplishment, and in my mind the result

deserves and asterisk.

Don't worry Brad, we all love you. The rules say the promoter can define the

"Masters" category, and having defined it, it then changed which upset some

folks.

Personally, I think If someone is stil holding onto their Cat 1, they should

be racing in the top race, regardless of age. If their Ego requires them to

keep their Cat 1, they aught to be held to what that means.

I think everyone should thank Brad for listening to their concerns and being

responsive to them.
