What is the Ring of Fire 12/24 Hour Time Trial
This is a 12 or 24 hour bicycle race. The object is to ride as many miles as
possible in 12 or 24 hours.
How will you know how many miles I ride?
You'll ride a day loop106.8 miles for the 12 hour competitors and 135 miles
for the 24 hour racers. Strategically placed checkpoints will verify your
completion of the entire loop. When you are finished with your day loop' you
will continue to ride laps on the 20 mile night loop until the race has
finished.
What about rest stops?
You can stop as often and for as long as you want. The clock, however, keeps
running even when you stop.
What about food?
Because of the unique dietary requirements of individual riders, it isn't
practical to provide all of the food in an event of this length. We will,
however, have some food/Hammer Products at the checkpoints. You may also
pre-arrange to have your food dropped off at the check points so that you may mix
your own food.
What's the terrain like?
A bit of everything; long mountain climbs, short mountain climbs, fast
mountain descents, technical mountain descents, rolling hills and flats.
Will there be headwinds?
Only in one direction J
How much does it cost to enter?
Fifty bucks per personso thats $50.00 for solo, $100.00 for two racers,
$200.00 for four racers. The price is the same for either 12 or 24, so
unless youre waiting for payday, pony up and register! * Entry Fees are
non-refundable, but may be rolled forward to next years race.
Are there any other rules?
Certainly, but the main ones to remember are: No cheating and of course, no
whining.
What am I? Recumbent or HPV
Any fairing that extends past a point halfway between the two wheels would
move it into the HPV category
Support Crews
While we recommend the use of a support crew, we have made the use of one
optional. Your PSV may only leap frog the rider during the day and may not
follow the rider at all on the night loop. Only pedestrian handoffs are
allowed during the Ring Of Fire.
Drafting
No drafting will be allowed for the entire event.

Course Description
The route begins at the Sisters Elementary School at 3200 Feet of
elevation. Riders will take off through some back roads and travel out of town with
some scenic riding through the Camp Sherman/Metolius River area. This will
be a great warm up for the climbs to come. As you exit from Camp Sherman onto
HWY 20 heading west, you will ride on a large shoulder toward the summit of
Santiam Pass (4817 Feet). The fast five mile mountain descent will take you
to the first left turn remaining on HWY 20 toward Eugene. In four miles we
take another cut off toward HWY 126. The road is slightly rolling downward
for about 20 miles here with some big, sometimes steep, rolling hills. At
race mile 70 we will turn left on to HWY 242, the McKenzie Highway. Those of
you who know this road realize what you are getting into here! 22 miles of
climb, with the last 14 miles of switchbacks taking you back up to an
elevation of 5325 feet. And what a view when you get there! Surrounded by black
lava fields, this is the most stunning moment of the course. There is a fast
technical descent back into the town of Sisters. At this point the 12 hour
racers will continue back to the Sisters Elementary School and begin the flat
19.8 mile night loop. The 24 hour racers will instead turn right and begin
the final climb; Three Creeks. This is a lightly trafficked forest road, so
enjoy. You will travel back up to 6000 feet during this 14 mile climb with
some sections of 9-11% just before you reach gravel and the turnaround. A fast
descent back to town puts you back at the Sisters Elementary School where
you will join the 12s in the 19.8 mile flat night loop.
