our lapses - it just shows that we could all work on being more aware.

A friend of mine, who is surrounded by people who ride in her life,

recently opened her car door and took out a cyclist in the process. She

is not a flake, certainly did not mean to do it and feels horrible!

She did everything she could to help the cyclist - called for help,

stayed with him till it arrived and took his bike home for him while he

went to hospital (bad cuts, no broken bones). She's even called him to

see how he is doing and to offer her help. I don't think she deserves

to be locked up :(

Education is the key. We need to get drivers to be more aware of the

consequences of their actions.

That all being said, hit and run drivers should be locked up and the

key thrown away!!

I live 5 blocks south of there on Lombard and hate this intersection. You

get dumped out in traffic at that spot as the street narrows because they

seem to have crammed a turn lane into 2 traffic lanes at some point. Drivers

can't see you as they turn right on Lombard from west 5th due to a fence and

hedges. I've had a car or two cut me off that way because they were turning

right on red and just couldn't see me. I suggest riding well into the lane

if you're going south through this intersection.

I understand this was not the case here - the driver was wrong, and a

citation is woefully inadequate. Assault with a deadly weapon is more like

it, though that implies malice and forethought, I suppose.

Better still, if you are taking MAX to Beaverton and heading south, get off

one stop later at Beaverton Central (the Round) and take Watson. There's a

bike lane the whole way and you're only a couple blocks west of Lombard.

People seem to expect cyclists along this route, and traffic is generally

calmer anyhow.

The crash occurred at about 5:00 pm at 5th and Lombard in Beaverton. The driver apparently was not paying enough attention and failed to observe Darien riding her bicycle south on Lombard St. From what I have been told by the officer that handled the crash the driver was clearly at fault and was issued a citation. Unfortunately a citation is all that can be thrown at stupid people that are allowed to operate a 4000 pound weapon...

I just talked to Darien and Chauncey again this morning -

They say THANK YOU for all the support. Darrell asked it there was anything

else besides cooking he could do ? well Darien asked if anyone might be

wiling to baby sit Tessa next week to give Chauncey a break now and then.

She would like to see Chauncey race PIR and Alpenrose just so he can get out

some. Plus if anyone would be willing to watch Tessa for a few hours during

the day sometime next week allowing Chaucney to get some chores done that

would be really cool too.

Darien also wanted to know if anyone would be willing to donate a bone or

two?

know a! lot of you have asked if there is anything you can do, well Chaucney

isn't the best cook in town and with Darien in bed 24, 7 for the next two

weeks. A nice home cooked meal might be a nice treat for the Curls.

Thanks to everyone for asking about Darien, it's great to be in such a huge

cycling family.
