My name is Gary Jensen, and this is my story: On Aug 10th, 2005, my Bride of 47 years was run down by, a careless teenager, a mile North of Weston, OR, on highway 204. The road is straight, and wide. The apron is 8 ft from the fog line to the gravel and my Sweetheart was 6 feet from the fogline. This 18 year old girl drifted off the road to the point where she struck Marilyn dead center of the hood, estimated at 60 mph, her right tire was in the gravel at that point, the impact caused her to react and over correct, rolling her vehicle into the opposite barpit. First she said the sun was in her eyes, which was easily disproved, and then changed it to "she was fiddling with the passenger sunvisor so the sun wouldn't be in her eyes when she turned, a half mile up the road". The Oregon State Police investigated, and the Umatilla County Assistant DA (Gretchen Ladd) decided to charge her with "careless driving" which carries the same fine as running a stop sign. ($231) A meeting with the DA and State Police produced no satisfaction. My beautiful Wife, was a seasoned rider, riding with traffic, well off the road, wearing her helmet and bright clothes. With this email, I am seeking advice, suggestions, venting some anger, and asking your membership, (if they are so inclined) to send letters to the editors, (or DA, State Police, etc) Here are the addresses of the local papers.
