That was a pretty random thought.







I was a four year varsity athlete in college. NCAA didn't strike me as

scummy, though. My impression was they protected the integrity of college

sport and seemed to be looking after the student athletes.







NCAA is really important for the income generating sports like Football.

For sports like cross country, rowing, stuff like that, perhaps it's just

more of a nuisance.

For those of you that follow or do anything with the NCAA, I thought I

would run this by you. I was a member of the Purdue cross-country team

(NCAA affiliated) before I quit and later joined the Purdue Cycling Club

(not NCAA affiliated).



(Purdue certainly does not offer scholarships for cycling, but nearby

Marion College does!)



I heard on the radio this morning that the NCAA will not make any

exceptions for student-athletes affected by Hurricane Katrina in

transferring to another school. Normally, if a student-athlete is on

scholarship and transfers to another school, they have to sit out of

their sport for one year. There are other policies too that the student

has to abide upon that I am not fully aware of, but that is a big rule.



Sounds bad, but maybe there is a good side to this policy. Say for

example, the NCAA did make it easier for student-athletes in that

hurricane area to transfer. If there was a mass exodus of say, the

Tulane track and field program because of these laxed rules, it could

sink their program. I kind-of think the NCAA is scum, and I thought

they were more scummy until I thought about this point.
