Summer Race Turn Out

Freyensee, James P

2005-09-16

Labor Day is in September, about what you would expect...I and from

others have said here, there are big drop-offs here in the NW/OBRA-land

July-August.

NorCal there is a big drop off in attendance after Labor Day.

There is little drop-off of the # of racers later in the season in the

NorCal area. I think one reason for this is that in fact, cyclo-cross

starts about 1 month later in October than it does here in Oregon.

Second,

NorCal scheduling positions their 'Oregon Cup' (aka, California Cup), in

August and September (which just so happens to be the most beautiful

months

in the bay area in terms of weather). I know this motivates some people

to

race in those months. Finally, many cyclo-cross racers in the bay area

use

those late season cycling road races to get in shape for cyclo-cross

season.

A typical pattern for a road/cyclo-cross racer is they do cyclo-cross

season, then they do a few races in Febuary and March because they have

better fitness than many road racers then, then they may drop off the

face

of the planet in May-July, then August they use the road races in

August-Sept to get them ready for the next cyclo-cross season.

I raced mtn. bike too when I was in the bay area, and I started doing

more

mtn. bike races as it dried out until by about July, I was doing nothing

but

mtn. biking because then in the bay area was crit season for road and I

didn't like doing those crits.

How about someone putting on 2 road races after the stage race

most of the single day road races are in the spring,

followed by stage

race season, then theres just basically a few crits (im

not counting

local PIR/eugene crit type of things) to finish the

personally, if there were road races i could look

id rather do those than do all the stage races and

burning out from

racing so continuously. i wouldnt mind taking some time

I agree on Molly's point about mountain bike events. As a roadie, I've

been Mtn-curious for a few years but, not having any experience in

mountain bike events, I'm not really prepared to show up at a race

My big complaint is event promotion/marketing. As a

We cannot take it for granted that people are just

Is that because there is a big drop in RACES!?!

On the Mt Bike side. There is a big drop in the

number of racers after June.

As CROSS season starts sooner and sooner each year and

grows more and more popular it really hurts Summer

races. I think now in August people are starting to

shift to CROSS and some racers take off July now as a

rest month instead of Sept like in the past.

Just my 2 cents from a Mt Bike promoters view.

Thanks

Randy

From a promoter standpoint we want to get the most

Even though I hear, personally want, more events in

the summer, it seems

that from a turn-out point of view the early season

I wasn't able to make it to High Desert like I

As to the standpoint of 1/2/3 & 4/5 races, it seems

like every race I

People always want more categories, and I agree with

you that having a

more often the

women's fields.

As far as the rules go, Candi can correct or give

the correct answer, my

assumption was you got the points for the highest

category the race was,

i.e. 3/4 races you get 3 points, 1/2/3 races you get

1 points. As long

as the race is big enough to count towards points

and it is a 3/4 race

you should get 3 points. Unless I am mistaken, this

could very well be.

This year we will host our two road races in the

July and August, so get

ready to peak at that time of year, as you won't

want to miss them.

Anywase, just another $.02 worth from a promoter and

cat 3 racer in

Oregon. Take it as you will and go have some fun

riding your bike.

There is little drop-off of the # of racers later in the season in the

NorCal area. I think one reason for this is that in fact, cyclo-cross

starts about 1 month later in October than it does here in Oregon.

Second, NorCal scheduling positions their 'Oregon Cup' (aka, California

Cup), in August and September (which just so happens to be the most

beautiful months in the bay area in terms of weather). I know this

motivates some people to race in those months. Finally, many

cyclo-cross racers in the bay area use those late season cycling road

races to get in shape for cyclo-cross season. A typical pattern for a

road/cyclo-cross racer is they do cyclo-cross season, then they do a few

races in Febuary and March because they have better fitness than many

road racers then, then they may drop off the face of the planet in

May-July, then August they use the road races in August-Sept to get them

ready for the next cyclo-cross season.

I raced mtn. bike too when I was in the bay area, and I started doing

more mtn. bike races as it dried out until by about July, I was doing

nothing but mtn. biking because then in the bay area was crit season for

road and I didn't like doing those crits.
