I can not speak for all Mt Bike promoters only myself,
but I get my flyers in as many shops as possible state
wide...glitch this year was person that was suppose to
stock Portland for me I found out didn't. Classes are
clearly listed on all the Oregon Mt Bike Series Race
flyers. I am 170 miles away...if anyone is really good
at getting flyers out to Portland shops and staying on
it for the whole year contact me I would be glad to
comp you at my races (Oakridge FTF, 12/24 Hours Of
Willamette Pass, 3 Downhills at the Pass).
Also seems like many Portland metro racers don't want
to race outside that area...come on down the single
track is awesome!
Thanks

I agree on Molly's point about mountain bike events.
As a roadie, I've
been Mtn-curious for a few years but, not having any
experience in
mountain bike events, I'm not really prepared to
show up at a race
without knowing more about the format,
categorizations, equipment
requirements, especially since I only own a single
speed. Give me more
info and maybe I'd take the plunge.

I noticed the drop in race attendance over the
summer
too. Road, mountain, whatever. I do not think
cyclocross really affects the summer attendance
significantly, folks like me who take cross
seriously
skip the winter/spring races and use the
summer/late
summer races as cross build up.
My big complaint is event promotion/marketing. As
a
rookie mountain biker (this is my 2nd season!) I
often
find race flyers lack alot of vital info and, I am
left desiring more info at the event site. (it
makes
me wonder how someone less comitted to racing
would
ever show up to a race!) I get the feeling that
racers
and promoters get into this rut and expect that
everyone subscribes to the OBRA list and already
knows
all about the venues and understands start times
and
such.
If anything, I would like to see a little more
effort
on race marketing. More informative and stylish
(read:inviting) race flyers. We have to make
racing
exciting.
We cannot take it for granted that people are just
supposed to know about all these races and will
just
show up cause we put a flyer on the OBRA calendar.

Subject: Summer Race Turn Out
On the Mt Bike side. There is a big drop in the
number of racers after June.
As CROSS season starts sooner and sooner each year
and
grows more and more popular it really hurts Summer
races. I think now in August people are starting
to
shift to CROSS and some racers take off July now
as a
rest month instead of Sept like in the past.
