Thats what I'm talking about cycling could be a letter sport with help from

the cycling community at large. It takes coaches going into schools

recruiting kids who may not be starring in another sport it's not just a

money issue. Soccer would be a good example, not only money was the reason

soccer took of here it was active involvement of those who play the sport

who at there own expense lead the parade.

I wish we could get more Jr's...our Mt Bike series

mailed out info to every high school in Oregon, but my

guess is most AD's just threw the info away, so they

wouldn't loose their team sport players to Mt Bike

racing. On a plus side there are more and more

schools that "Letter" kids for racing Mt Biking now.



At some races Jr's make up 1/3 of the racers...of

course we don't get 650 ( I WISH!)at Mt Bike races and

to be honest after the high school series ends and

Summer starts the number of Jr's drop, but that has

more to do with kids wanting to be kids on their

Summer break.

on my Junior racer

Most sports have entirely different programs for juniors, or are school

based. Some examples are Youth Football, Little League, Girls Softball,

Youth Soccer, I could go on for ever, but the reality is that there is

ample   precedent for differential pricing for youth sports. Having said

that, sports have gotten more expensive across the board, particularly

in schools where it's pretty standard to have to pay to play. I know

that when I was in high school sports were free except for personal

gear.



I agree that $12.00 isn't too bad, compared to some other events. My son

also plays roller hockey and the price is pretty comparable with cycling

when spread out over the season. If he takes an interest in any other

sports I hope it's something cheap like walking!

Mt Biking charges $15 a JR racer and during the High

School Series we draw 40-70 Jr racers per race from

all over Oregon, so I am not sure $12 is too much.



With out starting a huge battle...Mt Biking has other

fee's road and cyclocross don't have to pay, that is

why it cost more.

Well, even the non-UCI events are over twice what other OBRA events

charge for Juniors. Most OBRA events charge $5 for Juniors; CC non-UCI

is $12. Add the need for a special bike, and it does become expensive

for a 6 race series. We race anyway, and will continue to do so, but I

can see how for some people it could be cost prohibitive.
