Tell like it is, Luciano. I was also one of those kids whose folks

didn't have enough money to buy me a race bike when I was a kid. I

waited until I was old enough to get a paper route and bought my own

BMX bike and raced it a little. I probably would have done more if

there had been a program or my parents had been willing to shuttle me

to races. Instead I played soccer and baseball - relatively cheap

sports by comparison. Nothing wrong them, but I wish there had more

avenues for me to race bikes as a kid. I finally bought a road bike

with money from yard work when I was about 14, but there still

weren't any places, at least that I knew of, for me to race it (I

still have the aluminum Raleigh frame!).

Simple things will do. I built up a TT bike this year and loaned it

out to some our juniors here in HR this summer. I don't have time

right now to organize a good kids program, but I am certainly up for

helping however I can.

George, maybe the fact that you don't have any kids of your own is an

opportunity for you to help kids whose parents can't and give back to

the sport that has given so much to you?

Well George it may be a matter of personal choice and background. I

worked

for the LA Rec and parks for years and spent an equal amount of time

volunteering. For two decades even with children of my own I have

spent

thousands of hours and dollars on other peoples kids. Some children

are not

blessed enough to have active, productive, and most of all involved

parents

at home. Least we forget cycling's extreme cost as compared to lets

say

Hoops. That is why even as a youth my working parents could not

afford the

sport beyond the bike. If it were not for local sports camps getting

people

involved in alternative sports like fencing, tennis, cycling kids

like

myself and oh yes Nelson Vails who attended these camps with me

would never

seen olympic silver at least not in track cycling. One of my

greatest

memories was throwing my own Hoops camps every summer for those who

could

not afford the local camps given by NBA players. Finally the

alternative is

scary urban kids left to there own choices, as prison space is on

the rise,

intervention beyond our own doors is crucial, and is not just a

subject to

throw money at. It takes time and personal commitment.

Why can their parents not subsidize their racing. Why is this the

role of

others. I do not begrudge some assistance and support those

efforts, but

the parents need to be the primary people paying for their

children's

endeavors. As it is, I already pay high property taxes and a

Multnomah

income tax to support schools, and as a citizen I believe I should

be

willing to do so. I also have no issue with providing some junior

racing

support, but at some point, I look to the parents to support their

children

and not expect others to do so. I realize it is a sacrifice for

those

parents, but they chose to have children and everything that comes

with it.

I made other choices for better or worse.

My opinion on any governing body is the same there is enough

revenue

generated by Adult racers to subsidize junior racing. Oregon could

be the

next thing to the Olympic training grounds in Colorado if Oregon

racers

start to embrace junior racing for it's true potential. I don't

know about

you but watching Carson Miller beating up on adults is exciting and

a

tribute to the future of the the sport (Sorry OLD GUYS).Let alone

the

invaluble experience Kent Johnston brings to his kids as

coach/active

  racer.

If every racer who could afford it sponsored one junior racer that

would

bring hundreds of juniors into a system that now struggles to field

100 at

any race. Compare that to euro racing where juniors and development

  programs

are there most precious commodity. Thus the euro dominance of the

sport in

almost all disciplines. No offense Lance,Levi, and the rest. Just

another

  thought.

can you say UCI. the non UCI cost for the junior race is $12. the

UCI

junior is $20, some of that $20 goes to the UCI for all the work

they do

Maybe off topic but why are the Junior cross races so

expensive with

  the

tremendous turnout for these events promoters would encourage

junior

    also

known as future racers by not making racing cost prohibitive.

I could

  be

alone here but after bike shopping and race fees it is quite a

leap

  for

  an

eight to ten race season. I think my main concern is the

future of

    Oregon

racing if the juniors programs are not somehow subsidized.

Just a

    thought.

This is not intended as a criticism of local organizers you guys do a great

job it is about numbers my concern is that only 33 junior riders make up the

field of 650. It takes a commitment to Junior racing to make it happen, it

takes mentorship, giving back to the sport outside of our own children to

encourage cycling as an option. If I was not up against the local non

profits that have absorbed all of the funding for inner city kids I would

surely be able to field at least 10 kids on my own. As it is without shame I

say I can't even afford to let my son race without serious sacrifice. My

point is if more clubs and individuals can privately ,collectively make this

happen it would shine brightly on the future of Oregon racing and racing in

general.

Yes, the UCI does something for us. Primarily, they assist us losing money

:-)

Even with the great numbers we get here in portland, we break even at best

on these UCI races. And that is with Cannondale and River City Bicycles

generous sponsor dollars. I cannot imagine having to subsidize a UCI race

in someplace where the 'cross scene is not quite as fervant as ours.

On a serious note, the UCI tag does draw the biggest talent. If you want

to put on a "big show" race, it needs to be affiliated with the UCI. The

races are big and fun....and that is why we do it.
