I have really appreciated hearing, all week long, about the interest in
growing junior racing. Growing the sport from the bottom up at the
OBRA and national level has intrigued me for some time. Over the past
couple of years, as I entered racing late into my adulthood. I have
also witnessed a growth in youth soccer, a national soccer program,
lacrosse, High School racket ball (43 HS teams), and if you can even
remember back a year ago. A very well organized group on Portland,
focused on Saber Fencing, recruited enough kids and coaching to produce
a gold medal at the Olympics. I have also been honored to say that I
have been able to witness first hand the work of Phil Sanders and his
BBC. But have also witnessed it's sometimes lack of respect in the
community. So what does this all mean to you interested in growing the
sport.
If you all want to see junior racing grow you need to have a plan, a
framework to execute the plan and then go out and do it within the
guidelines of the governing bodies that exist. For example, appoint a
youth cycling coordinator at OBRA, have that person set up a committee
and establish a plan with measurable goals. Outline the resources you
need. Make a plan to get what you don't have. That's how it works.
Trust me on this. I have been on enough boards and by training and
profession know how things like this get done.
It is very thought provoking to consider just how much that is
currently going on in cycling in Portland that it does appear to be an
adults only sport. Not meaning to offend anyone, but the average age
at Alpenrose seems to be about 35. Between the Murrays and Phil Sanders
of the world, (don't feel bad if your left out, just good examples for
me), it is amazing that we cannot attract more young people to the
sport. But as I outline previously, until it becomes an organized
effort, junior racing will be hit and miss.
Personally, I would nominate George Shreck as junior racing
commissioner. He has more energy and enthusiasm and gumption for
racing than anyone I have run across in racing. You all need someone
with a little fire in the belly and I think George has that.

OK, so we have established that money is an issue, but is by no means
a major factor on whether or not kids race (or ride at all).
So let?s do something about it!

How about a bike festival out at PIR? We have the track, we have the
cyclocross course, we have the mountain bike short track. You can
drive there, ride there, or take the MAX. We could have a day of
events coordinated with CCC, BTA, Shift, public and private schools,
etc. We have activities for everyone, from little kids on training
wheels to Pro racers. We teach kids (and adults) the rules of the road
and the trails, we have a bike rodeo, bike polo, log pulls, bunnyhop
contests, night light parade, freestyle shows, tall bikes, short
bikes, long bikes, you name it, we do it. We make it educational, and
we make it fun. Better yet, we combine it with a show/exhibition and a
swap meet. We have it in late spring or early summer, on a Saturday,
when people are just getting into the season and they are not in
church. We can try to get ads and Public Service Announcements in
print and broadcast media to get the word out, including southwest
Washington.
