As an aging mountain biker, I hope that promoters will continue to recognize those of us who are over 50. There are several riders in the Sport 55 & over category who are competitive enough that they may retire to golfing if they're up against the 40+ youngsters. I recently read an article about the fact that we baby boomers are far more active into our waning years than preceeding generations. Oregon mountain bikers certainly support that assertion. OK, off to my AARP meeting.

Personally as a promoter...I hate the idea of a 12

year old racing a 17 year old in any class, but there

are very few "Expert Jr's". The classes Candi listed

were for the BAR only...she states promoters and

series such as the Oregon Mt Bike series which I am

part of can add in classes for the series races as

needed such as Single Speed and other age classes. We

(the Oregon Series) are toying around with JV and

Varisty classes instead of age classes...this would

break up kids by skill levels and also encourage more

schools to allow kids that race to Letter in Mt

Biking.

 Tim,

Okay, that's worth more than 4 cents. I'm with you

in not wanting to make it

more trouble than it's worth for the promoters.

Having a consistent

break-out like you suggest would be a great

improvement. If promoters wanted

to do more, great, but doing at least a 10-14/15-18

would be nice. Probably

safer for all concerned too.

Having watched Ethan and several others really enjoy

the CCX and Short Track

MTB series, I agree that this is a good format for

kids, however since he's

also had a great time with the road and track

racing, all I can say there is

that variety seems to be the spice of life at least

in this family. The

short track MTB series also made a desire of mine

come true, to race with my

son. I have to say that watching the competitiveness

of the 4/5 riders has

left me kind of intimidated to join in, but the

short track format, like

CCX, lets me get into racing in a format that I feel

comfortable with for

now. (Not having a road bike sorta clinches it for

me also.)

Having said all that, I want the promoters and OBRA

folks to know that I

really appreciate all the hard work and effort that

goes into putting on a

race and all that goes with being a sanctioning

body. I have the impression

that I only see a small piece of what goes on to

make this work. People

arent' afraid to answer newbie questions from

overprotective and

under-knowledgeable dads and that makes me feel that

bike racing in Oregon

is a great place for my kids. Thank you!

Doug,

I agree. But, perhaps a compromise for Road might be

just two junior cats.

Junior 10-14 and Junior 15-18 categories. This would

be better than the

current 10-18, but not too much work to track stats

for. As the father of a

10 & an 8 year old I hope to keep them interested in

bike racing as they get

older for both my own interests and to grow the

sport. Young kids can be

discouraged when riding against young men. Also, my

guess is the 15-18 year

olds wouldn't mind being separated from the younger

kids as well.

My ten year old has found the most fun bike racing

to be MTB and CCX. If one

goal of our OBRA is to encourage and cultivate

younger kids into cycling,

making these two disciplines more inviting to the

10-13 year olds would be

great. Many ccx races offer two choices being a 5

minute kiddie race or a 40

minute junior race, maybe offering something in

between ( Like one compete

lap) at next year's ccx. A big thanks to the

VEloSHop folks fro adding

something similar to their Hood River Race when I

asked! Once they are

hooked on ccx or mtb racing, moving from ccx or MTB

to road or track is an

easier jump. Hey, it seems to working for the

adults. CCX seems to where the

most new OBRA memberships are coming in.

Beyond just serving the kids, the more our events

have opportunities for

kids to participate, the easier it is for us Mom's

and Dad's to race these

events ourselves. It becomes a family function,

rather than a day away from

the family!!

I would suggest keeping the junior categories broken

out into smaller

age brackets. Such as: 10-12, 13-14, 15-16, 17 and

up. (You can race

most of them at the same time, just score them

separately.) At this age

there is a huge difference between 10 and 13. Having

the 12 and 13 year

olds race against 18 year olds would be like having

Cat 4 riders up

against Cat 1. I think it would be pretty

discouraging and would be

counter productive in encouraging more junior

riders.

Any other opinions?

As an aging mountain biker, I hope that promoters will continue to recognize those of us who are over 50. There are several riders in the Sport 55 & over category who are competitive enough that they may retire to golfing if they're up against the 40+ youngsters. I recently read an article about the fact that we baby boomers are far more active into our waning years than preceeding generations. Oregon mountain bikers certainly support that assertion. OK, off to my AARP meeting.

I agree with Randy... the young kids really need to see some pay-off to keep

the interest there. There is less pain and (in their mind) more pay-off on

a sofa with game boy and coke...unless he/she finishes first-second or

third.... not fifteenth in a race against someone close in age.

Another $.02 worth...

A lot of people think that because you are an expert/elite on the dirt

you should be a 3 or more on the road or if you are a 1/2/3 on the road

you should be an expert/elite on the dirt. There are a few people that

is probably true about. Though there is more tactics to road racing then

MTB Racing and more bike handling skills to MTB Racing then road racing

and people need to figure out where they belong by starting at the

bottom and working their way up. It is usually the sandbaggers getting

beat by these people that are the complainer's:)

Though there should be the sporting aspect that a cat 1/2 should

probably not start as a beginner mtb rider and Pro/elite mtb'er should

probably race at least as a 4 (and in Oregon most are 4/5 races

anywase).

Mtb racing is way more complicated than it needs to be, it seemed to get

worse and worse (and more expensive) as more people wanted a reason to

go to the race. That reason... I got 3rd in the

Semi-elite-expert-30-35-all mountain-xc race ????? At Sea Otter one year

they had and I am not exaggerating here.

Downhill was the race:

Rigid, sport, 30-34

front suspension, sport, 30-34

full suspension, sport, 30-34

full suspension 4"+ travel, sport 30-34

5 categories for every type of bike for one age group in one class. They

broke it out every 5 years from 10years old to 50+ for every class,

beginner, sport, expert, elite & pro. and then awarded prizes up to 5

deep if there were that many people in a class, those prizes-a ribbon to

everyone but 1st that got a t-shirt. Don't get me wrong, I am all for

rewarding people for their efforts but it seemed they were making up

classes for people to win just because.

As to the master's it is very confusing to a lot of people I know. Some

races do 35+, some 40+ and then you get the state RR, Crit & TT

championship races that are 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, etc... in both men and

women. Plus most TT's follow the format, though it is easier in a TT to

separate racers. Then different stage races do different things and you

get someone like Steve Larson racing Cascade for the $5k purse against

cat 4 guys who wanted to race and couldn't unless they signed up as a

master.

From a promoting standpoint it is hard to pick and choose what

categories you do, the standard Men 1/2, 3, 4/5 & Master's (regardless

of age) and women 1/2/3, 3/4/masters seem to be available at every race.

Some races like Kings Valley have a M35+ (3/4 only) race to try and even

the field it seems. Cherry Pie had a 5 only race that saw pretty good

attendance.

One question I have is what is the reason or intention to have an age

categorized field vs. just an experience categorized field? I raced a

couple M35+ races this year, mostly because I didn't want to race in the

1/2/3 field for various reasons early in the year and at Cascade because

the 2/3 field was full. The majority of the master's field seems more

experienced in a lot of races than a standard Cat 3 field so some people

feel safer.

The one thing I would really like to see is consistency throughout the

Oregon races, based on USCF or not- we are our own organization after

all. I know some people want to win the BAR for the masters, or 3's or

1/2's or etc... Being able to count on the same age or cat at the races

is a good thing. I would also imagine the BAR get's complicated when you

earn points in a 30-39 and a 35+, or whatever.

The rule book states:

8.0 - CATEGORIES

Categories are assigned by the OBRA Executive Director. New members will

be assigned to Category 5 Men or Category 4 Women Road and Track,

Beginner Mountain Bike, Cyclocross beginner unless they meet upgrading

criteria. This categorization will appear on the rider?s OBRA membership

.

8.1 - UPGRADING AND DOWNGRADING

Upgrading and Downgrading guidelines for road and mountain bike racing

will be published. Ability categories provided by other organizations

will be recognized by these guidelines.

8.2 - ROAD/TRACK CATEGORIES

Men Women

Category 1 Category 1

Category 2 Category 2

Category 3 Category 3

Category 4 Category 4

Category 5

8.3 - MOUNTAIN BIKE CATEGORIES

Pro

Semi-Pro

Expert

Sport

Beginner

8.4 - CYCLOCROSS CATEGORIES

A

B

C

8.5 ? AGE GRADED CATEGORIES

Racing age is defined as the age the rider will be on December 31 of the

current year. Age graded races are defined at the discretion of the

race organizer subject to the following:

MASTERS may be any age range 30 or older. If no age range is stated on

the Entry Form/Race Announcement the default age will be 40 and older.

JUNIORS may be any age range 18 or younger. If no age range is stated

on the Entry Form/Race Announcement the default age will be 18 and

younger.

Enough rambling, let's just go ride and race our bikes....

I have no stake in this but I always thought that Sport was more like

Cat 3. Since women's fields are so small (and I've done very few mtb

guys think cat 4 = sport?

Besides gotta discuss something other than masters racing once in a

Isn't the crossover from one racing discipline to another MORE related

to the skills than the fitness? Cat 2 roadies start as , what, 4's on

the track? Do you place expert mtb'ers, but new roadies, directly in

cat.3? Prove yourself in each new discipline, then move up. You can say

it's too easy for these guys to ride off the front, but you have to be

able to not slide down the banking, or not soil your shorts everytime

you ride through a rock garden, to make it there.

I think we should keep masters at 35+ for all categories. Doesn't USCF

master racing start at 30+?

I also think we should look at cyclocross categories. At Hood River

there were at least two cat. 2 road guys racing in the C's.

to enjoy and build on the sport as JR's

Well, if categories reflect fitness, there _really_ needs to be a

below beginner category for me. Couch potato isn't fair but I'd take

dog walker or lackadaisical rock climber.

To be fair to Mike, the breakdown the way he suggests is probably

better for men (still don't feel it is right but better ) because men

actually have a category 5 to start on the road.

Yes, cat 4 = sport, cat 3 = Expert or Elite.

At least this is consistent with the racers I know who race both disciplines.

I agree with David; way too many MTB categories. Unless participation

goes back up to 90's levels, it's ridiculous to have 25 different

categories for cross country.

It's also time that we made things easier for those who try to track BAR

points by standardizing things a bit; make one age cutoff for masters

and make all the promoters honor it. Much as I'd like to have a masters

cat 4 40-44 category in every race, that doesn't make sense. I'd make it

something that other race organizations use, so it's truly 'standard,'

but that's just me.

If I recall from earlier discussions concerning the masters age group.

The OBRA default for a masters race has been 40+ and unless otherwise

specified by the promoter that is what a masters race is. I can think of

several races that opted to do that last year, Banana Belt, PIR, and

even now with the Cross Crusade. Are you proposing by your e-mail that

the individual promoters would no longer have this option to change the

masters category and be required to use the 40+ with no break out of

individual categories at all masters races?

Coming from the less competitive side of things, it would be nice to be

able to sub-categorize the masters into 1/2/3 and 4/5 - but I recognize

there are often not enough racers for this. So... I vote for 40+

because at least this way I'm not faced with competing against a 35 yo

Cat 2 at the top of their game.

Tracy - Of course most other race organizations (whether USCF or

30 plus.   However I am sure "some pro chatter" can come up with the

obra demographic proving 40 is the appropriate age for masters. 40 plus

masters races limits my participation. I'm not downgrading. 40 plus at

Of course since OBRA caters to older riders 40 plus is appropriate.

I would kinda like to see 35+ 1/2/3 and 35+ 4/5. Of course not every

Subject: [OBRA Chat] Planning for 2006

I'd like to try and standardize categories more in 2006 then we have

done in the past. Just for the sake of discussion here are the

categories I am proposing

Road

Cat 3

Cat 4/5

Jr

Women

Women 4 when possible

Masters 40+

Mtn

Pro/Elite

Beginner Men Open

Open Women

Beginner Women

Open Juniors-defined as all Sport, expert juniors and any Beginners over

15

Beginner Junior Men 14 and under

Masters 40+ Expert

Masters 40+ Sport

Masters 40+ Beginner

Junior Women

I have also been asked to change the way the mtn bike and road

categories relate to

Cat 5 Beginner

Cat 4 Sport

Cat 3 Expert

Cat 1/2 Semi Pro/Pro

Candi Murray
