road/mtn categories

I would like to see a person earn the right to race

Pro in Mt Biking. In downhill more then cross country

people sign up Pro that are clearly not Pro's, some do

this for the money....In one cases the guy got beat by

2 minutes in a Downhill that is a huge amount for a

downhill. Since they start one minute apart going

down the same course it really screws the next racers.

It has also happened with Pro women in both Cross

County and Downhill, as I said not a lot but it

happens and most times it is NOT an OBRA regular it is

a new person or an out of state racer thinking they

can make some $$ because they found out their were no

other Pro women and someone will get the prize

$$$...funny part is I know there are a couple strong

women that should move up from Expert and race

Pro...you know whom you are go for it!

There is a proposal before USAC right now to allow

rider to earn road

upgrade points by competing at the track. They feel

that the skills

learned on the track should count toward moving

riders up.

Mtn bike and ccx are self selected.

Isn't the crossover from one racing discipline to

another MORE related

to the skills than the fitness? Cat 2 roadies start

as , what, 4's on

the track? Do you place expert mtb'ers, but new

roadies, directly in

cat.3? Prove yourself in each new discipline, then

move up. You can say

it's too easy for these guys to ride off the front,

but you have to be

able to not slide down the banking, or not soil your

shorts everytime

you ride through a rock garden, to make it there.

I always felt the same way, Mike Ripley the new

mtn bike rep suggested

that the road fitness was greated than the mtn

bike fitness (maybe not

the skills but the fitness) and that the

categories should be adjusted

 up.

I have no stake in this but I always thought that

Sport was more like

Cat 3. Since women's fields are so small (and I've

done very few mtb

or road races) - it is hard to judge (and we have

no cat 5) - do you

guys think cat 4 = sport?

Besides gotta discuss something other than masters

racing once in a

 while.
