From the way I understand NORBA rules, a mtn. biker can select BEGINNER,
SPORT, or EXPERT. If a rider wants to be SEMI-PRO or PRO, they have to
earn it (I assume by points).
Also in NORBA rules, to be an EXPERT you have to be an annual NORBA
member. For any NORBA sanctioned event, you can do a 1 day license for
SPORT or BEGINNER.

All riders start as a Cat 5 on the track, even the 2's. If Lance
Armstrong showed up at the track he would be a 5 ;-)
There is a proposal before USAC right now to allow rider to earn road
upgrade points by competing at the track. They feel that the skills
learned on the track should count toward moving riders up.
Mtn bike and ccx are self selected.

Isn't the crossover from one racing discipline to another MORE related
to the skills than the fitness? Cat 2 roadies start as , what, 4's on
the track? Do you place expert mtb'ers, but new roadies, directly in
cat.3? Prove yourself in each new discipline, then move up. You can say
it's too easy for these guys to ride off the front, but you have to be
able to not slide down the banking, or not soil your shorts everytime
you ride through a rock garden, to make it there.

I always felt the same way, Mike Ripley the new mtn bike rep suggested
that the road fitness was greated than the mtn bike fitness (maybe not
the skills but the fitness) and that the categories should be adjusted
up.

I have no stake in this but I always thought that Sport was more like
Cat 3. Since women's fields are so small (and I've done very few mtb
or road races) - it is hard to judge (and we have no cat 5) - do you
guys think cat 4 = sport?
Besides gotta discuss something other than masters racing once in a
while.
