If some of this operational behavior at CCC is true (and this souunds like
it is) then I believe there may be (have developed) an environment of
unacceptable ethics in some of the employees. I do not like hearing about
some of the things regarding the head of the organization, but the frontline
professional ethics (including honesty) should be at the top of the priority
list. If he is performing all of his duties professionally and this other
stuff does not enter into the CCC, then I would tend to give him his chance.
If I saw some of these behaviors (I doubt if he would try to "off" a deer on
Alberta however) coming out "at the office", then I would really be
concerned for that organization and our community. Nobody is perfect, but
in an organization that is based on the giving of the metro area public and
business for it to survive... it needs to operate at the highest level of
integretity. I wonder if the "Board" should do us all a favor and look into
the "honesty/ethics" of the people/organization? I wonder if the Board is
removed enough from the business to do that? A few years back I gave them
two of my bicycles I was not riding any longer and have to admit felt a
little hollow when I walked out as I was not even thanked or hardly
acknowledged. One was a 1961 Raleigh record that I won the Novice Mt. Tabor
Rose Festival race on in 78, 79 or 80 (can't remember which for
sure...getting old is fun because you can forget the details...maybe I
actually won that race all three years!!!!) and I had racks and fenders on
it. My have times changed in racing. I did hear that there was some
unhappy employees a few years ago that left and started the bike shop on
Mississippi... which received another of my old bikes (afterward) and a
bunch of my old touring equipment.... When I walked out of there I felt like
it was appreciated and would get to some people that would really make good
use of the donation. I sure hope the GOOD done by the CCC outweighs any bad
and (maybe I am naive) if some folks working and volunteering there might be
tempted to take advantage or be rude... the management will lead/mentor them
away from that behavior. At present I can say I have no desire to make a
trip there. Boy was ignorance bliss for me.

Yeah, and I had a guy come in to a shop I once worked at who wanted an
estimate of a bike that had been damaged or stolen (sorry, can't
remember which). He wanted to know what the new, replacement value of
the bike was. On further examination, I learned he was an employee of
CCC, and had been there when the bike came in on a donation. It was real
nice, so he "took it."
Oh, and there was the time a couple years back when I was given a whole
bunch of reflective tape (I'm talking a couple yards here). It was way
more than I could use, and I lved near CCC at the time, so I took about
half of it over there figuring they could put it on kids' bikes. The guy
I gave it to at the shop said "Oh cool, I'll put a bunch on my bike."
I haven't been to CCC since, and I no longer recommend them to other
people either, either to donate to or buy from. But if you're a bike
whore with low ethics who is on a budget, I'm sure it's a great place to
work.

The person at the helm of an organization is responsible for setting
the tone throughout the organization.
Perhaps for a large corporation with thousands of employees it would
be unreasonable to link everyday customer service issues with a
"Jekyll & Hyde" type CEO. But for a small community operation like the
CCC it's not very far from the executive director to the shop floor.
Suspended for shooting a deer on his college campus? (In case one
hasn't been to Bard, it's not the type of school where half the
students have gun racks in their pickup trucks, it's a fairly elite
east coast liberal arts college).
Convicted by a jury of assault against his girlfriend?
Am I surprised to hear that the organization run by this individual
has now stooped to treating its customers with blatant disregard? No,
unfortunately I am not.

Doesn't the CCC give away thousands of free bikes to
needy kids during the holiday bike drive...funny how
that wasn't in that tabloid type story.

Here is an archived Oregonian article from earlier this year,
regarding the executive director of the CCC. It could be relevant to
the experience your girlfriend describes. Unfortunately, I cannot say
I am surprised by her story, please pass along my sympathies.
