Try disconnecting the cable from the derailleur and shift. This will tell
you if it's the shifter or the cable that's gummy. Likely a little of each.
1) Flush shifter liberally with WD-40. You'll need to take off the little
inner dust cover that you remove to replace the cables.
2) Lube shifter internals with some oil like tri-flow or Pro-Tech. Do this
liberally. Lube pivot points.
3) At the very least lube your cables and housings. At 5 years, I'd just
replace the cables if they haven't been done since you bought the bike.
4) Lube the derailleur at all its pivot points with Tri-flow
See if that helps.

Cable housing?

Try blasting the hell out of it with some aerosol Tri-Flow. Use the
little tube the tri-flow comes with to get deep into the shifter and
flush out the dirt and derbis. Move through the full range of the
shifter a few times to help loosen everything up and get the tri-flow in
there and then allow it to drip dry as much as possible. I feel like
this can be a waste of tri-flow and may be gunking up the inner
workings, but it has worked for me.
I'm sure others can comment as well.

Hey back yard wrenches,
My rear 9 speed Ultegra shifter is acting up when I try to drop down
to
smaller cogs. When I push the small lever over to the left I get more
resistance than normal, then the lever is slow to return and move the
derailleur. Sometimes it won't shift, sticks to the left and I have to
pull
the lever back to the right to get it to shift. This shifter is at
least 5
years old and is now on my CCX bike and I'm assuming it may be acting
up
due
to extra the dirt and water intrusion. I have read on another online
forum
that it it not recommended to try to disassemble, clean or lube STI
shifters, so I have always left them alone. But some maintenance is
called
for here I'm sure.
Any ideas? Thanks much, Dave.
