I also have lots of experience with the HAC4 but unfortunately I can't

give it a good recomendation. It was great the first year I had it,

tracked all manner of information, had nice software and features. I

used it extensively mountain and road biking, backcountry skiing and ski

mountaineering.

But then it started loosing functions. First the heartrate quit

working, then the wheelspeed, then the cadence failed. All I have left

after spending almost $500 (for all the bells and whistles) is a very

expensive watch and thermometer.

I'm waiting to see the new Garmin unit before I purchase a replacement.

My Garmin Vista GPS has been bulletproof for the last three years and I

consider that indicitive of the quality of their products.

The Polar 720i would be my other choice for something a little more

mainstream.

worn as a watch apparently.

I've been researching the Garmin units (Forerunner 301 and Edge 305) The Forerunner is out now and comes as a watch which has extra bike mount unit.  The Edge is supposed to be out in Nov of this year.  If you want a bike specific unit hold out of the Edge otherwise the Forerunner looks pretty sweet as well....Bicycling Sept 2005 pg 82 did a great article on using GPS for riding lots of sweet stuff you can do with the GPS unit and your home computer for training.  The best prices I've found is $209 for the Forerunner and $259 for the Edge.  The Edge comes with either a heart rate monitor or a wireless cadence. I've been riding with the VDO MC 1.0 for the last few months and its been

great, especially for $100 (wired). The feature I like the most besides

overall altitude gain is displaying your current grade.

I think there is one out now called the model 350 and it sells for $250.

It works by GPS and gives heart rate, speed, distance average speed and

elevation. It can be downloaded. Mike Adams has one and it seems to

work very well.
