I found this website a few months back when I was looking for a
nightlight myself. It's a great resource because it covers a wide range
of styles and brands and gives you examples of how bright they are.

I'll third that opinion. I got a Nite Rider (multilevel halogen flavor)
for last season and it rocked. I was commuting to work and mountain
biking for 1-3 hours on my way home several nights a week. The tail
light is blindingly bright. It's expensive but now I can't see ever
being satisfied with anything less.
And don't forget - it's an American product. I still believe that means
something...

I've done a significant amount of research on bicycle lights and I'm not
sure there's a 'best' light out there. I think Craig has a hub
dynamo/light combo that he's pretty happy with. The super-bright lights
out there are probably HID, which give you more light per battery than
anything else. If you can afford it, something with a LiIon battery
will have the best runtime and lighest weight. For riding in the city,
I always want a much brighter light than riding out where there are no
streetlights. All that aside, I couldn't find anything I could afford
to buy, so I built my own.
