High-density pack shots, yes! Nice. Some great facial expressions in there...seems like always at least one smile...mostly lotsa concentration. Cameos are nice, but the thick of it shows the rider against the rider against the rider against the rider against the rider against the rider against

Great shots...I especially like #8 (9) and #115 (116), the latter really

captures the essence of mudruts 'n carry-up steepness.

The actual start of the race is so boss in 'cross. Kind of the opposite

of normal road racing; here the sprint starts the race! As a

photographer (and/or spectator), it's hard to choose where the best

vantage point is going to be. Of course, moving around is good. Then

again, if you find a "special spot," that is tough. Can't be in two

places at the same time (so they say).

Here's a tidbit I sent to Don Edgar, PhotoFaction:

I know as a spectator, one of the most exciting things I've seen was

1st lap at Alpenrose, when the long line of wailing riders snaked in,

around, out of the velodrome itself....not so much an individual thing

as a monster of human activity. I think the cameo shots are great,

too, but the mass-energy of this great sport is what sets it aside

from most other cardiovascular racing venues.

I agree... As I photographer I would suggest that you races stay in a pack longer. Not being able to keep up with the faster guys is not an excuse. :) I am so playing.... I also like pack shots.

I will say this, being a racer and a photographer... As racers we believe that cyclocross has a lot of pack racing. But in reality after the second lap a pack usually consist of two maybe three riders. So for the photographer to get pack riding, they need to be somewhere the pack will still be together and since the photographer isn't moving with the pack they will get may 10 to 20 shots a race and not all of those will turn out well enough to publish.

As a photographer I find that the "interesting" shots come in places that riders give themselves room from each other. Those spots are more interesting when there are three or four riders, but how many people were going to race two or three a breast on the downhill rocky section at Barton.

I do appreciate the input and next race I will work on getting more pack shots, I am pretty sure that Don and Clark will too.

It's easier said than done - cross races get spread out pretty

quickly! For someone to get a shot of me in the middle of the

action, they'd have about 30 seconds. LOL. Would be easier to get

shots of people who aren't quite as slow as me in a group of

course....especially if someone bought Shane or Don a wide angle lens

and a second body for Christmas.

Anyway, it's a great suggestion to shoot riders in groups when

possible. It's just that sometimes "in the action" means the start

or 3 guys going over barriers at once.

I have to second what David said. Many of us riders like to see photos of

ourselves but also of ourselves in the midst of the action. You might also

find you'll be able to sell more. A photo with a lot of racers in it could

appeal to many of those racers. A photo of just one racer will likely only
